Islam is one of the oldest religions known to man and in most countries it was used as the governing rule in place of a constitution. The modern world has developed, and new governing rules have been established. Some are drawn from the Islamic teaching known as sharia, and they demand application in most Islamic countries or societies. The modern world is however opposed to some of the sharia laws since they tend to undermine sensitive issues in the contemporary world. The sharia in most cases does not recognize the gender issues, some human rights and democratic issues relevant in the modern world. The sharia was used in past centuries to direct the everyday living of the Islamic community (Ernest, 2004). The sharia is believed to be the instructions given by Prophet Mohammed to the Islamic people to dwell by on a daily basis. Social exigencies of the Islam community require all members to follow the sharia to the later failure to which punishment is administered according to the directions in the sharia. The Islamic community believes that the sharia is the rules given from god to guide their lives and help them sort issues within the society (Ernest, 2004). The modern world is open since the world has been reduced to a global village, it gives the formation of laws an international outlook in which the laws governing a society or a nation are scrutinized to establish their validity.The sharia has several rules that do not conform to the international human rights laws and thus; the Islamic laws are not compatible to modern laws. Most Islamic laws are male driven, and the internationals laws applicable to all nations advocate equality in gender issues (Ernest, 2004).
