The narrative of Benito Cereno can be defined in three parts: the first part is told from a third person limited point of view, the second part is Cereno’s deposition to the court, and the third section is a brief conclusion of the narrative. In the first part, the narrator is placed outside the story and our knowledge is confined to what Captain Delano knows. The third person limited point of view is a common approach in mystery narratives and it keeps the readers in the dark as to what exactly has happened and is happening. The narrator’s perspective told in free indirect style, blurs with Delano’s perspective, allowing us to identify and differentiate the two. And again, the narrative blurring emphasizes and dramatizes the greyness and ambiguity…
In Gary Soto’s biographical narrative he entertains his audience by telling them a story of his past and how it had shaped him as a person. To elaborate, in the narrative Soto steals an apple pie from the German Market and even though he didn’t feel guilty at the beginning it slowly consumed him and lead to him feeling guilty for the sin he had just committed. To help him Soto used the figurative language of imagery and, the sound device, onomatopoeia, in order to help the readers paint a clear picture of him regretting his past mistakes. For starters, Soto uses a lot of imagery, due to the fact that, by doing this he’s able to draw the audience in and help them depicted a clear mental image of Soto and his mental state while he stole the apple pie.…
In the following passage, the character Frank McCourt experiences three different moods about and towards the same person. McCourt feels cautious, confused and afraid. The literary piece involves those three moods that are integrated into the book. The moods are all different but connected back to the character and the passage. The change of mood in this passage was through it’s language…
A 36-year-old Dominican man with a chief symptom of back pain comes to see me for the first time. As his new internist, I tell him, I have to learn as much as I can about his health. Could he tell me whatever he thinks I should know about his situation? And thenIdomybestnottosayaword, nottowritein his chart, but to absorb all that he emits about his life and his health. I listen not only for the content of his narrative, but for its form — its temporal course, its images, its associated subplots, its silences, where he chooses to begin in telling of himself, how he sequences symptoms with other life events.…
Sacrificial Drinking: Alcoholism in The Lost Weekend The Lost Weekend (Wilder, 1945) is a film that follows the story of alcoholic writer Don Birnam’s (played by Ray Milland) destructive weekend. The film follows the popular film-noir style of its time to bring to light all the darkness associated with alcoholism. This disease leads its victims to make sacrifices that are catastrophic to the individual and those around them.…
Instead of him forcing his ideas onto his readers, Rodriguez allowed the readers to have more freedom with his narrative while also guiding their thoughts subtly through the use of architecture as a…
Throughout the excerpt Rebecca, the narrator is recounting a dream she had about a place that is dear to her, which is called Manderley. While reading the excerpt the reader will come across a variation of moods. In the beginning one will come across a mood of mystery. Eventually, as the reader continues on throughout the passage the atmosphere starts to become nightmarish and very eerie. Subsequently, as the reader nears the end of the passage they will start to get a feeling of nostalgia created by the passage.…
The best short story I have read is, “Mericans” by Sandra Cisneros. The story is about a little girl who is narrating where she is caught between the ‘old’ world and the ‘new’ world. I like the mixture of Spanish words in the story such as La Virgen de Guadalupe and la ofrenda because it gives a sense of a different culture. I also like the humorous use of the ‘awful grandmother’ because the reader can visualize a specific heritage and cultural behavior. I enjoy this short story, it reminds me of my Heritage because of how hispanic grandmas pray then give ofrendas at church and take their time while doing so.…
The way he describes things makes the imagery of this story so outstanding. The author knows exactly what syntax is and uses it to his advantage. There is one sentence that was fantastically put together and it was located at the beginning of paragraph 6, “Through the headset, a robust male voice surged forth, emptying into my body.” This sentence is not only well put together but it also has you feeling like you are there sitting on the hard carpeted floor with your back on the book shelves in the dimly lit corner of the library listening with him. Another, part of his work that was astonishing was how he described the changing of weather, “I could tell, by the slowly brightening room, that it had started to snow”…
The Crow in the Woods The Crow in the Woods by John Updike is unlike any other story I have read before. The author does an odd but wonderful job in describing in detail the thoughts and surroundings of an average married man. This story meets course goal number seven as it enhances the students’ understanding of the value of holistic thinking in making informed judgments and in applying values as they become increasingly conscious of what is at stake if we fail to understand the relationship between human culture and the environment.…
Pieces of literature, in this case a short story, are composed of different literary motifs. They can help reveal a theme of a story, set a certain tone, or evoke a mood. In the story “Three Dirges” in Requiem Guatemala by Marshall Bennett Connelly is one short story that has many literary motifs. There’s the development of theme, use of time, point of view, foreshadowing, and more. This essay will focus on one of the many literary elements that can be found in the short story: image and symbol patterns.…
A great number of people enjoy the feeling of being frightened whether by a movie, story, play, or whatever else. Even so, most like to have a little scare every now and then. In Lucille Fletchers, The Hitchhiker, a man is taking a road trip from Brooklyn to California. However, it is not just an average road trip. The main character, Ronald Adams, comes across a mysterious man on the way.…
Irony is the use of language to signify the opposite of one’s meaning, usually to emphasize meaning or create humor. In the novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the author, Mark Haddon, uses irony to convey the mentality of Christopher, a child with Asperger's syndrome, and give the reader a deeper understanding of him and his disorder. The format of the book and genre were specifically chosen by the author to give the reader an initial idea of how Christopher is different. Distressing settings are also used to further differentiate Christopher from the reader.…
The diction throughout the piece is strong, each word carefully chosen to create the largest impact on the reader. “I couldn’t use my locker for weeks,” remarks Smith, “because the bolt on the lock reminded me of the one I had put on my lips when the homeless man on the corner looked at me with eyes merely searching for an affirmation that he was worth seeing” (Smith). This word choice allows the reader to visualize having a bolt tightened between his or her lips and recognize the guilty and morose tone that Smith attempts to convey throughout the piece. In addition to the thoughtful word choice, Smith uses metaphors near the end of the talk to augment his understanding of language.…
Following a non-linear structure, he divides the memoir through dialogues, notebooks, poetry, narratives, photographs, and maps; And when the text is viewed as a whole the form serves the function of creating an understanding of the narrative and developing all aspects of the text. Ondaatje encourages the reader to not question “what actually happened” but rather question the method by which the author thought it happened. The author’s perception and thought are the main construction of his character; therefore, it is the core of the author’s identity. His style is similar to the style of an impressionist painter, who tries to capture a single moment of an image at a specific place, and in a specific moment. Then, presents it to the observer, in the exact manner it was captured.…
