Reinforcement is meant to increase a behavior. Therefore, positive reinforcement is presenting an appealing scenario immediately after a behavior in order to increase the likelihood of its reoccurrence. An example of this would be giving some ice cream to a child after they put their dishes in the sink without being asked. Negative reinforcement is taking away an unappealing scenario immediately after a behavior in order to increase the likelihood of its reoccurrence. An example of this type of reinforcement would be a student not having to complete a homework assignment after earning a perfect score on a quiz covering the same material.
