I believe he felt as though he was ready enough to take on an adventure like this by himself. Though mother nature didn’t display her full fury she still proved to him just how dangerous she can be without seeming to be temperamental. He would have survived if he would have been smarter about his journey, but some people out there are so headstrong and will jump into anything without much thought about the possible outcomes and dangers that when they realize the peril, it’s too late. “Fifty degrees below zero meant 80 degrees of frost. Such facts told him that it was cold and uncomfortable, and that was all. It did not lead him to consider his weakness as a creature affected by temperature. Nor did he think about man’s general weakness, able to only live within narrow limits of heat and cold” (London). Though the man was obviously unaware of the potential outcomes, the wolf dog was the complete opposite. He went with his instincts and knew what the dangers could be. The dog did not know anything about the temperatures. The animal was worried by the great cold. It knew that this was no time for traveling” (London).
