New Hanover County: When Disaster Strikes Natural disasters happen all the time. Most of the natural disasters that occur do not have a direct impact on our specific location. Many times, people do not prepare for natural disasters when warned, and are not prepared with the necessary tools in case one strikes without prior knowledge. The knowledge of what to have, or what to do, can go a long way in helping determine the impact of a natural disaster in your life. In New Hanover County, located in the south-eastern part of North Carolina, many different natural disasters can occur. Many Hurricanes have hit the coast of North Carolina and affected New Hanover County in a major form. The Hurricane we will specifically discuss is Hurricane Floyd, which made landfall in September of 1999 on New Hanover county. Hurricane Floyd was a major hurricane that was at one time a category 5 storm. The storm had supposedly weakened, even though evacuations were ordered. When the storm hit, the area was decimated. There was massive flooding, which caused the sand on the beach to be moved to the street! The hurricane hurt the area more than physically though. In an article by Gareth McGrath, he describes the Hurricanes impact by saying that the storm “drained North Carolina’s rainy-day fund, caused massive budget cuts as money was redirected toward rebuilding efforts, and forced the state to embark on an aggressive public relations campaign to show the world that its beaches were still open for business.” (McGrath 2009) This is important because not only does it show the effect the storm had on the area in a physical manner, but also economically. Mr. McGrath tells us in the previous quote about how money had to be “redirected” and how the beaches were fighting to be still open. These two problems caused an economic impact by causing money to be used in an area it was not thought to have been needed, but also to help show everybody the beaches were open. First of all, is what to do during the storm. There are many different things you can do. Staying indoors is very important, as well as making sure propane tanks are turned off, this according to Deborah Skinner and her article on what to do during a hurricane. Another major way to stay safe is to avoid using the phone, except during an emergency. (Skinner 2012) This way workers can stay in contact. Those who need information should have a weather radio to listen to for any updates during the storm. After the storm, there are many important procedures to follow as well. Many people often have loved ones involved, which makes them want to check on those people, which is very important. Other important things to do are to prepare for an insurance claim by taking pictures and following other necessary steps. Also, it is important to check your area to make sure you are safe and not exposed to anything dangerous that the storm may have brought down. There are many steps to being safe during and after a hurricane in New Hanover County, and these listed are major ones that need to be
