When I was a young girl I wanted to do a little of everything. I wanted to do some form of Martial Arts. All the excitement thrilled me. I wanted to do sports like my brothers, so I participated in all the sports that the rec center in Newton provided for children. I started taekwondo in my sophomore year of high school.
On August 25th, I decided to go to taekwondo before trying out for the school play. After we stretched and did warm ups, it was time to practice and learn a variety of kicks. A type of kick are the jumping air kicks, where you jump and kick up in the air. When it was my turn in line, I was hesitant to do the kick at first, but I tried my best. My parents followed as the nurse wheeled me into the examination room. She asked me all the routine questions and told us the doctor will be in shortly. The doctor examined my leg and told me to push his hand down like a pedal, but I couldn’t. An x-ray machine was brought in by the radiologist. He then x-rayed my leg and left to get the results.
Coming back into the room, he said, “You sprained and strained your ankle and sprained part of your shin. You didn’t tear anything and you didn’t break anything but you will leave with a boot and crutches.” With a slight smile I showed my relief that I didn’t need surgery.
He talked to me about how taekwondo was going when he yanked my ankle into the correct position to be put in the boot. It hurt so bad that I couldn’t let a scream out. He then gave me something for the pain.
“I have never seen this bad of a sprain and strain in one ankle,” commented the doctor. “It's a wicked sprain. So when your friends ask, you can say that. How ‘bout that?”
“Sounds good!” I replied with a smile on my face. The doctor left and the nurse came back with some
