Murtagh’s stubbornness causes much pain for him in The Inheritance Cycle. Stubbornness means that one will not budge from one’s belief even though it might mean they get punished for it later. The first example of obstinacy occurs when Murtagh, as a kid, tries to escape the palace that kept him prisoner. Murtagh kept plotting new ways of escaping the prison even though he failed many times. His stubbornness while escaping also caused the death of his only friend. The second example follows his successful escape from the palace. He runs into the protagonist, Eragon. He chose to stay with the almost helpless character. At one point in their travels, Eragon and Murtagh found themselves being chased by the Imperial Scouts and the only way to escape
