The healthcare field of nursing is facing puzzling challenges as the nursing workforce faces challenges such as, nursing shortages and generational differences issues worldwide. To explain first, the healthcare field of nursing is experiencing an increase turnover rate as both aging and young nurses withdraw from entering and/or continuing the nursing profession. Stanley (2010) suggested that a decrease in the enrollment of nursing education programs and searching for less stressful career opportunities are some of the reasons why the nursing field faces a significant decline in most countries. As the Baby Boomer generation of nursing is retiring at an increase rate, the healthcare profession is afraid that essential and plentiful knowledge of nursing experience from the Baby Boomer generation cannot be easily replaced by the Generation Y. Moreover, as the nursing profession experiences its first time of having the four generations work together, generational issues and/or stereotypes has become an issue as well. For example, Stanley (2010) expresses that the misunderstanding of values, work ethics, and communication styles has affected how each of the four generations find common ground based on how the generations seek understanding amongst each other (p. 849) A Technique to address generational differences issues:
Congruent Leadership: Leaders actions match the values and beliefs of their fellow constituents in the organization. The leader becomes a role model to demonstrate the values and beliefs that make the leader become more suitable for nurses in from each generation (Stanley, 2010, p. 850).
