A Discussion of Beowulf’s Motivations
Ever wonder why you have felt the need to do something? This essay will discuss Beowulf’s motivations from the epic poem, Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel. Burton Raffel has won the Frances Steloff Prize and the Translation Prize for the French-American Foundation. Beowulf was about a young man named Beowulf who risked his life to protect others on the land of Danes making him a hero. Beowulf had to fight three different monsters during this long epic poem. When fighting the different monsters he had a different motive for each battle he endure. I see this as glory because he had already made his way home when he received new about the death of Aschere. Beowulf seeks glory in multiple different ways, first how he went all the way back to Danes to defeat Grendel’s mom. To me this makes it seem like he was looking to be viewed as a hero by the ladies, trying to be the big protector. “Grendel’s mother is hidden in her terrible home, in a place you’ve not seen. Seek it, if you dare ! Save us once more and again twisted gold, heaped up ancient treasure, will reward you for the battle you win!” (Lines 443-449 in Beowulf) This is proof that he is doing it for fame because it no longer tells you he has to do it. The three points that I have stated deal with the fact he did it because it was his duty, he wanted glory, and it was a sacrifice he had to make for his people. He had many other motivations in this epic poem but these are the main ones that I noticed while reading this poem. Would Beowulf had fought in any more battles if he had not died from the dragon? We will never know but I believe he would have because he was all for helping his people in the city of Geats. What are your thoughts of this
