She, in a way, almost acts like she is too good for him. This can be seen through in the way that Rosalind says that Phoebe thinks that she is a very beautiful lady, but in reality is plain looking. She is a very blunt character and speaks her mind, which is what makes her sound so bitter to Silvius and Rosalind. She’s a very interesting character because we are able to see two sides to her: 1) When she is not in love with a man that loves her and 2) When she is madly in love with a man she barely knows. The thing that Phoebe wants in this scene is to get Ganymede to love her. The thing that stands in her way, I think, is herself. She is unsure of what she feels at the moment and has to realize for herself that she is in love with this man, even if he irritates her or chides at her. The way that she speaks about him almost makes it seem like she doesn’t want to be in love with him, but can’t help herself. It’s almost like she’s saying “Oh well” to his flaws and decides that they don’t matter enough to make her dislike him. Then to see her move from this kind of thinking to wanting to send him a “taunting letter” just makes me laugh. It’s funny to see what love, or just the beginnings of a crush, can do to a person. For many of those that I know that have a significant other, they do say that they married someone that was very different than them or can drive them crazy at times. But they all agree that working through those things that can make them butt heads is worth it because they love each other.
