Have you ever made a quick decision that has come back to hurt you? Have you ever had a miscommunication that resulted in a bigger problem? The character’s in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet experience these same obstacles. Romeo and Juliet’s families are enemies, so they have to devise a plan that will allow them to be together. This plan leaves room for many problems. Therefore, lack of communication and hasty decisions are what lead to a tragic end for both young lovers.

First of all, Juliet speaks which much irony, which confuses Paris and her parents. When Juliet comes back from her confrontation with the Friar, she speaks with much irony to her parents when they question her about this. They think that she went to confession with the Friar, but really she went to seek the Friar’s in devising a plan that will allow for Romeo and her to be together. Juliet’s father thinks that she has repeated for her wrong doing and happily exclaims, “I will walk myself to County Paris, to prepare up him against tomorrow. My heart is wondrous light since this same wayward girl is so reclaimed” (4.2.47-49). This ultimately causes Juliet’s father to move up the wedding from Thursday to Wednesday. Juliet has to take the potion given to her by the Friar a day earlier on Tuesday night, as opposed to the planned night of Wednesday. This messes up the schedule in the plan that Juliet made with Friar Lawrence. Also, Friar Lawrence assures Juliet that he will send Romeo letters telling him about the plan. However, when one of Romeo’s friends runs into Juliet’s funeral, he tells Romeo about this. The letters have not been delivered to Romeo, so Romeo thinks that his love is dead. Because Romeo thinks that Juliet is dead, he decides that he does not want to live without her. He plans to go to Juliet’s tomb and kill himself. Finally, at Juliet’s tomb Romeo kills himself because he thinks that Juliet is dead. When Juliet wakes up she sees Romeo dead, so she kills herself. Before she kills herself she says, “I’ll be brief. O, happy dagger, this is thy sheath. There rust, and let me die” (5.3.174-175). This is a very unfortunate ending to this timeless tale.
