When public education is facing microaggressions it is a product of social inequality of classes. It is fact that it is so unaware that we are producing these microaggressions, that it is shown that we a product of media showing so many stereotypes to put the lower classes to a view that people are actually surprised when a minority has a college degree. An article from the Los Angeles times exposes this.
“College students confront subtler forms of bias: slights and snubs” written by Teresa Watanabe and Jason Song , shows that the students are becoming aware of these microaggressions. Not only that, they are saying that the unintentional aggressor will be labelled as a racist or some other label, but that is not the truth. The students saying this, obviously do not know that a great number of minorities are victims of hundreds of years of stereotyping shown in media to implant in societies’ head which will affect the view that society views on them.
The one argument against this movement that does worry me though is that this will create a society of victims. I can actually see this argument against this movement happening as some people take almost everything offensive, such as the coffee cup controversy from Starbucks, where conservative Christians were offended from the cup of starbucks that changed from a christmas decorated cup to a simple red and white color for this year's holiday …show more content…
That people will know that these microaggressions can turn to real racism or xenophobia over time. Not only that but how the people can understand the obvious or not so obvious stereotypes that the media shows them. Focusing on these microaggression will be “the next step forward in the country's long, slow march toward greater equality and understanding.”1
As lower classes become poorer the frustrations are made and stereotypes are formed, so how these microaggressions are made is due to the stereotypes leaving a lasting impact on society.
