The Journey of Two Lost Hearts
Mental illnesses are topics that society takes too lightly. Mental illnesses can be caused by a variety of traumatic reasons. As we see in Violet and Finch, negligence and death contribute a negative impact in their lives. While one makes it through and the other loses the battle, Theodore Finch and Violet Markey have their own separate issues that they are trying to cope with while trying to finish the wandering project. All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven has created a journey of two characters who try to help one another overcome the issue that is holding them back. The theme the author wanted to portray is the the reason mental illnesses or suicidal thoughts start.
Violet and Finch’s parents neglect their children and their feelings when it comes to what Violet and Finch need. Finch’s mother never paid attention to Finch. She didn’t even realize he missed two weeks of school because Kate called him in sick under her name. The school counselor who Finch talks to every Friday, leaves a voicemail for Mrs. Finch about her son being bipolar, but he deletes it. Finch feels guilty for not letting the cardinal in, because it was a simple task to save its life. Death can be a reason for a mental illness because it mentally damages a person just like Eleanor’s death did to Violet, and death can also be another reason to blame oneself like Finch blamed himself for the death of the cardinal. In All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven mental illnesses were a theme that was shown in two unlikely people. It gave an outlook on how two people from different social groups have more in common than they thought. The loss of loved ones for Violet, the torments of Finch, and negligence of both families created a message that the author wanted to put out. Some see mental illnesses as just a feeling, but it can be deadly as any physical
