The philosophy in fight club is that capitalism has allowed men to purchase identities rather than creating their own. When you do this your just building a fake identity and just as the narrators does yours will come crashing down too. This is shown in a quote by Tyler in the book and the film, he says “You’re not your job, you’re not how much money you have in the bank. You’re not the car you drive. You’re not the contents of your wallet. You’re not your fucking khakis. You are all singing, all dancing crap of the world.” Once again reassuring the audience that their material possessions don’t make them unique or complete.
