Fear can play a huge part in creating a Marxist power. In The Crucible fear is created within the community as people are scared of being accused of being a witch. The court then uses this fear to take control. As we know already, the court and the church think of themselves as higher ups. For example, Parris must have seen an opportunity to earn power because it is clear that he knows that the girls are lying. Afterall he was the one who saw them dancing in the forest in the first place. He doesn't care though. He uses Abigail's accusations as a way to earn wealth and power within the town. He even defends the girls when John Proctor tries to tell the court that they are lying. Parris says “I can only, say, sir that I never found any of them naked, and this man is”. (Miller 105 ) Another example of Parris only caring for money would be when Abigail steals all the money that he has and she flees. He is more concerned about his money then he is Abigail. He explains to Judge Danforth “Thirty-one pound is gone. I am penniless.” (Miller 126 ) He also explains that he must hang John Proctor that morning or Proctor will send out a vengeance on Danforth. Another power coming through ownership would be Putnam. Putnam believes that most of the land belongs to him because of his grandfather's will. He argues against Proctor and Giles that they cutting down the trees on his property when he says “ I warned you before Proctor that's my lumber, you're in my bounds!” (Miller 32) Putnam even has his daughter convict Mr. Jacobs by saying that he sent his spirit into her window at night and onto her. She even goes on to tell Judge Danforth that their is a man speaking in Jacob's ear right now. Of course this is made up
