Mark Antony first manipulated Brutus. He manipulated Brutus and the other conspirators into thinking that he was on their side after Caesar was assassinated. He told his servant to say “Brutus is noble, wise, valiant, and honest”. (Act 3 - Scene 1 line: 1340) “Say I love Brutus and I honour him” (Act 3 - Scene 1 line: 1345). He also said “ Friends I am with you all and love you all”. Brutus knows that Portia might know about the assassination and must manipulate Portia to think otherwise. He says to Portia “I am well in health, and that is all” (Act 2 - Scene 1 line : 880). He later says “you are my true and honourable wife, as dear to me as are the ruddy drops that visit my sad heart” (Act 2 - Scene 1 line: 915). When Brutus manipulates Portia he uses a very subtle technique. After using multiple short but very meaning full sentences towards her, he eventually gets Portia to stop thinking of the event. Brutus’ second use of manipulation is on the people, while he gives his speech after Caesar’s death. After Brutus assassinated Caesar the people are very confused and hectic about the situation. Brutus must manipulate the people to make them calm down and believe that the death of Caesar was a good thing. Brutus says to the people “Had you rather Caesar were to live and die all slaves, then that caesar were dead and die all free men?” (Act 3 - Scene 2 line: 1555) When manipulating the people Brutus uses many effective rhetorical devices. He uses Rhetorical questioning, when he asked very meaningful questions to the people he got them thinking about if Caesar was actual a good leader. He also uses repetition. He repeats
