Examples Of Mall Ethnography

Improved Essays
When thinking about the ethnography at first I could not think of anything that I would find interesting to observe. Everyone around me had really interesting ideas. One person wanted to observe a Wiccan group and participate. Another person wanted to ride public transportation for their ethnography. They thought it would be interesting to observe passengers and drivers. One day I went to the mall with my sister and I thought that observing the interactions of shoppers and sales associates would be interesting. However, I felt that the mall was a place everyone went to and has a good idea what happens there. Then I thought that I could go to a swap meet and observe what happens there. In the city I live in there are a few swap meets to go. All are a bit different from each other. Depending what you want that is where you go. The first swap meet I went to was the Van Buren Swap Meet in Riverside. This was the first time I had gone to this swap meet and I thought this project was a good excuse to go. However, this swap meet was smaller than most of the ones I have gone to. There was not much to see and I walked the swap meet in 45 minutes. The other swap meet that I went to was Rubidoux Swap Meet in Riverside. This swap meet was larger and busier than the Van Buren Swap Meet. This swap meet has more vendors that sell used items. It can be fun to find hidden treasures that you did not know that you wanted. The second time I went …show more content…
The swap meet is a place to experience a different culture. When people go to the mall nothing there is authentic. The food is not an accurate representation of where they are saying it comes from. When someone gets Chinese food from the mall they know that that is not the food they really eat in China. Clothes that are native to certain countries are mass produced by corporations and are not even made in their native country. However, when people go to the swap meet vendors from other countries are bringing their products with them. The both swap meets I went to were selling tacos. The tacos were like the ones someone would find at a Mexican restaurant or those taco stand people see on the street. They were also selling Mexican snacks and candies. One vendor was also selling sandals that he went to Mexico to get. Another vendor was selling kitchen cloth napkins that are popular in Mexican families. They are usually large and white and most of the time they have an outline of flowers. Customers will take them home so they can embroider the napkins themselves. The swap meet is a place to explore a different culture here in

I was sent to a hotel for a total of 10 days, alone with absolutely no one I knew. During this time period I had met numerous students between the ages of 14 and 18 years old. Each of these students had been from a different state, town or city. They each had different backgrounds, cultures, lifestyles, even diets. It was when I had actually started to talk to these people I had realized, I was not in Florida anymore.…

While doing researchers, many anthropologists use the tool of ethnographic fieldwork. Instead viewing a culture from a bird's eye perspective, anthropologists insert themselves into the culture they wish to study. This is known as participant observation. However, when entering an unfamiliar culture and encountering unknown people, anthropologists first have to gain the trust of the people around them to learn about their lives. This is called creating rapport.…

This method was familiar to me before, as I took Social and cultural anthropology in my High school. In the course of the class, every student had to conduct a three-week fieldwork in a setting of choice. Although this was a very short time for research, I think I was able to grasp some of the difficulties anthropologists, but probably also sociologists, face when they decide to use the ethnographic method. The biggest problem with ethnography that I faced was access. A researcher investigating a social setting will always be alien to its field of study and the informants at first, which – depending on the group – can cause insufficient or not representative data, the latter being a problem of participant observation anyways.…

According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, desire is a “conscious impulse toward something that promises enjoyment or satisfaction in its attainment.” Whether what we want is bad or good, we are constantly attracted to being in a state of satisfaction. There are times where we struggle with making the right moral decisions because we know in the back of our minds that it is wrong. We get a satisfactory sensation when we get our hands on our strongest desire and we much prefer to feel happy rather than neglection. Bryan Spinks mentions this sensation in the perspective of a church.…

Being a 16-year –old, and having taken my first semester of college classes this semester with my high school classes on top of that, all here at CSN, has been an unforgettable experience. On the other hand, from the three college classes I have enrolled in, including German 111, Communications 101, and Anthropology 101, I have, in my opinion, learned the most with my Anthropology 101 class. This class has been a great and interesting experience that has allowed me to view the world in a different way than most people. To illustrate, even though I thought most of the things we discussed in class like linguistics and archaeology were interesting, I consider learning about ethnology the most memorable and fascinating concept for me. To illustrate,…

The ethnography that I chose is the The Hopi Way by Laura Thompson. This book discusses the way of life of the only surviving group of the desert dwellers, the Hopi. I will give an overview of the Hopi’s environment, political and social organization, the journey from birth to death, the resources used during this time, and how they made a living. I chose this book because I have family living in northern Arizona and I think that the translation of the word Hopi which means the peaceful people is beautiful. I also decided to pick the Hopi because they are one of the oldest living cultures in the world today and learning about how their culture survived when others didn’t is captivating.…

Ricardo said he thought I did a good job representing the essence of family in Haitian culture. However, during our conversation I found him saying, “not everyone does that” a few times. I then had to clarify I was looking for aspects of culture as a whole, he agreed that what I had written covered that pretty well. One example is when I wrote about adoption and stepparents. I recall from our second conversation that these events do not occur very regularly so it is possible that I may have overgeneralized the situations.…

Mini-Ethnography For my mini-ethnography project, I chose to research the life at the restaurant located down the street from my dormitory building. The primary focus of this ethnography is to compare the norms of the employees when the supervisor is present at the restaurant and when she is absent. As defined by Richard T. Schaefer, the author of, “Sociology: A Brief Introduction,” a norm is “an established standard of behavior maintained by a society.” How does the standard of ethical behavior change when the supervisor is there keeping an eye on all of the employees compared to when she is absent?…

Being considered as a shopping wonderland by many, the shopping malls in Singapore attracts thousands and millions of people to visit Singapore each year. Although there are some cases in which shoppers were scammed, for example, the incident that happened at Sim Lim Square where a Vietnamese tourist was cheated when buying a phone, such incidents are few and far between. These have not dampen the shopping spirits in Singapore. Singaporeans, having an indescribable love for shopping, has led to the increasing number of shopping malls being built, especially near the housing estates.
