It is a families’ duty, according to the gods, to lay to rest a body that has pasted. If Antigone would have just left the body on the outside of the walls with no proper burial of some kind, she would have felt guilty for not trying to do anything. To many people, they would feel guilty if they knew they could lay a body to rest, of someone in their family, and a ruler was in the way of that. In the discussion from class, and the paper we read about moral dilemma, there is a love of family between Antigone and her family. Christopher Cowley stated, “Duty to the family dead is there for the supreme law, passion and value, and Antigone structures her entire life and her vision of the world in accordance with this simple, self-contained system of duties” (Cowley). Whether it was from Antigone’s father killing his own father or both of her brothers fighting each other, the family carried a lot with them. Throughout the whole entire play, she is very set in her ways about the burial of her brother. Another reason this is, is because she wants to do the right thing with Polynices body. She feels that it should be laid to rest, it doesn’t matter what happened to cause the trauma. After all, Polynices is Creon’s nephew, and a native to Thebes. Being a native to Thebes he should have had a very nice burial. Especially because he was a part of the royal family. Also, being the nephew of Creon, Creon should have shown some remorse for letting Antigone bury Polynices. Creon is very stubborn, he will not change his law until he finds out the bad news about he will lose two who are close to him. In a society, especially this one, the laws of being a family member don’t match what you should do as a citizen. Antigone, goes with the laws of being a family member that is set by the gods.
