Shakespearean Tragedies and Tragic Heroes
A Shakespearean tragedy is when the main character has a hamartia, placed in a ghastly situation, and has a disastrous ending. A tragic hero is someone who is set-up to be defeated, and the hero doesn't have to be in high status. Shakespearean tragedies include: Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Titus Andronicus. Shakespearean tragedies were one of the most liked and popular plays that he produced, and it has shaped other stories and plays that we read today.
To begin, the most famous Shakespearean tragedy is Romeo and Juliet. Juliet and Romeo were in love. Their parents abhorred each other and would quarrell. Romeo and Juliet were star crossed lovers, because they couldn’t be with each other.

In the play Hamlet, the main character, who is Hamlet, is depressed. His father had perished. After his father died, Hamlet’s mom had remarried very quickly to Hamlet’s uncle (who was his father’s brother). Hamlet’s father’s spirit had visited him, telling who killed him. Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, had put poison in his ear when he was asleep in his garden. His father’s spirit ordered him to get revenge and kill Claudius. Hamlet went to do his orders when he found his mom, Gertrude, laying dead. She drinks the poison that was meant for Hamlet. Laertes tells Hamlet that Claudius was responsible for this. Hamlet fights with Claudius, then stabs him with a poisoned sword and makes him drink the rest of the poison. Laertes sees what is happening and takes the poisoned sword and stabs Hamlet. Laertes dies because he is stabbed by his own sword. Then, Hamlet dies from his fatal injury. This is a Shakespearean tragedy because everyone in the storyline died. The movie, The Lion King, is based on the Shakespearean tragedy called, Hamlet. Simba, who was the son, father died because he was killed by his brother. The modern movie, Warm Bodies, is based on Romeo and Juliet. The main character is a zombie and he loves a human. They can’t be together because they want to kill the zombies, but she loves him. So, she tries to get him to turn into a human, so they can be together. In musical business, the song “Love Story” by Taylor swift, is about a non-approving father and star-crossed lovers. There is also a line in the song that says,”My daddy says stay away from Juliet,” which is clearly from the shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet.
