The promises were to bury his body in secret after he died, never accept help from strangers, prevent Devola, her elder sister, from getting married to Kiser Pease, and to always keep the family together. Under no circumstance was she supposed to break these promises. To begin, Mary Call had claimed land for her family, in an attempt to keep her family together. She did not tell her sisters, Ima Dean and Devola, until after she had buried Roy Luther’s body with the help of her brother, Romey. No matter how much he begged, Mary Call respected Roy Luther’s wishes despite Romey’s arguing. Another way that Mary Call had proved her loyalty to her family was by refusing Kiser’s hand. Kiser had his eyes on Devola since before Roy Luther had gotten sick and after all his promises and offers he made for Devola’s hand in marriage, she declined.
