In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, many people that were worried about their reputation, which lead to deception, death, and arrogance. Throughout The Crucible, many of the characters lied about witchcraft. Most of the people that lied were doing it to protect themselves. Abigail talks about how they danced and conjured one of the girl’s dead sister. But she says to them “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night” (Miller 19). She's wanting the girls to lie about what they did. She doesn't want her and the others to be punished for dancing to the devil.
