1980’s. Most talk shows in 1980’s were logical and rational lead by male anchors.
On the other hand she put emotion in her talk show, and often share her own personal stories of pain and joy on interviews or over her stories, This allowed her followers to see her “human side” which makes them feel a strong connection with her. Her empathetic personality was attractive to audience and help her to be successful in her career.

She had to continue to suffer sexual abuse from other relatives, including her mother’s boyfriend, until she was 13 years old, then she ran away from home. At 14, she became pregnant (the baby died shortly after birth) and she moved in with her father in Tennessee. The poverty, sexual abuses, and lost of a baby were not her mistakes and amazingly, these experiences did not put her down but motivated her to move forward. These challenges molded her to become the woman she is today.
Even though her experiences were disheartening, such as poverty, sexual abuses, and lost of a baby, she has a positive attitude and treat it as a “breakpoint”. She even considers living in poverty as a blessing. According to her statement, she said, “ I am so grateful for my years literally living in poverty, because it makes the experience of creating success and building success that much more rewarding”.

Her life story teaches us that leadership is not something you only born with - it is a result of many years of learning and developing from your challenges and the results of the choices you made on a day to day basis. We see how Oprah chose to move forward beyond poverty and abused. This became an inspiration and a great model to many women like her. She is a leader by example not by title alone. As a charismatic leader, her vision and action leaves a lasting impact on people’s attitudes, values, and beliefs, and these people that she influenced moved to a position of taking control of their own lives and create significant changes. The mark of a true leader is her ability to multiple herself. Oprah developed a culture of leadership where she cultivated great leaders.
