In spite of his destructive advice Friar Laurence gives a speech to Romeo as stated, “ too swift arrives as tardy as too slow”(2.6.15). Laurence had given Romeo the statement to warn him about rushing love. His speech creates dramatic irony for the audience because most know eventually the couple dies for their love whether it was rushed or not. Then later in the play he goes onto saying,”With baleful weeds and precious-juiced flowers” (3.3.8). Shakespeare created verbal irony by having Friar Laurence saying that line throughout his speech. By creating verbal irony he suggests that Friar Laurence is not only talking about flowers being poisonous or healthy, he is also talking about how the relationship was gonna end up to be poisonous. Friar Laurence contributes to Romeo and Juliet’s inevitable death to their relationship.
Shakespeare uses juxtaposition to emphasize Romeo’s romantic nature ironically leads to tragedy. Romeo shows his romantic nature as he says, “It is the East, and Juliet is the sun” (2.2.2) He starts to compare Juliet to the sun as he tries to sweep her off her feet using his romantic personality. Then in the same speech he says “Arise fair sun, and kill the envious moon”
