Most people desire to be treated with fairness and equality. While justice is meant to be distributed with fairness and equality, Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible portrays that this is not always the case. Those appointed to administer justice often misuse their power in order to get revenge on those they feel deserved it. Revenge manipulated the system of justice by twisting information to gain what it desires. These two themes, justice and revenge, are observed and developed as the main plot through the characters and their fates in The Crucible. She was a maid in the Proctor house. Fired by Elizabeth Proctor, she now tries to use the town’s fear of witchcraft to her advantage. By utilizing her power and position in the court, she got what she wanted. Jealousy and revenge consume Abigail, compelling her to falsely accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft by any means necessary. With Elizabeth out of the way, Abigail believes she can marry John. Therefore, Abigail stabs herself in the stomach with a needle so she can claim that Elizabeth Proctor stabbed her, “Abigail were stabbed tonight; a needle were found stuck into her belly” (Miller, 1177). Abigail also takes the opportunity of being in the court to impel herself with a needle, without anyone seeing. Abigail then asks Mary Warren to give Elizabeth a poppet with a needle stuck into the stomach t further incriminate her, “I made a gift for you today, Goody Proctor.” (Miller, 1165). In order to put an end to the madness taking place in the courtroom, John Proctor admits that he committed adultery with Abigail, which she completely denies. Abigail now uses the attention and power she has in court, as well as the town’s fear of witchcraft to her advantage. By using this false evidence, Abigail is able to incriminate Goody Proctor.
