When Mathilde finally returns the second necklace, she is assumes that Madame Forestier thinks she is a thief because she took so long to return it. However, she could not tell her why it took so long for her to return it because she knew that her sense of being part of high society would be stripped from her if she told Madame Forestier the truth about what happened to her necklace.
