Examples Of Irony In Saboteur

In the story Saboteur, an example of irony would be: “During the two weeks of his vacation, he had been worried about his liver, because three months ago he had suffered from acute hepatitis, he was afraid he might have a relapse”(Jin 170). This would be an example of dramatic irony because if was perfectly fine when he got there, why should he worry about suffering again? People worry too much about so many things, he was just being dramatic because he was going somewhere he wasn’t familiar with and was worried. “But he had no severe symptoms, despite his liver still big and tender”(Jin 170) The keywords that gave this dramatic irony away was “no severe symptoms”. They made it seem like it was a big deal while going on vacation just because he had liver problems a couple months ago. If he was on the course to recovery, going somewhere won’t just magically make you have severe symptoms like before. They identified the issue and he’s now getting better, no need to be afraid of it. This is an example of situational irony because nobody really expected it to be this serious. It all could have started from one person and spread like a wild fire between other people. I think that nobody really knew how serious the disease was, so everyone went about their lives and it came back and affected so many people. The expected outcome was that nobody would die, but actually a lot of people did and many more probably will. “Mr. Chiu was so sick that he couldn’t stand up from the chair the first try” Jin (176) People thought that he would recover and all would go well, but he had a different feeling. In the end it turns out his condition was getting worse and worse. No one expected him to get this bad again, and it turned the opposite route. I guess the message here is that if you have a bad feeling, to go out and get more help and not listen to other people’s
