People always say one thing but often means another. Irony is the figure of speech of words that are used in a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the word (Bavota). Flannery O’Conner was born March 25, 1925 in Savannah, Georgia. She moved to Milledgeville, Georgia with her mother soon after her father died of the hereditary disease lupus. O’Conner graduated from Georgia State College for Women. She got her masters from the prestigious University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop. Flannery O’Conner is a Southern Gothic writer. It is about a family who takes a vacation to Florida. On their journey the grandmother was being a pain in the rear end to everyone. The grandmother tells her son that is driving to turn off to see a house that she had remembered. This ultimately leads into a car accident, where soon all of the family members will meet there death.
A Good Man is Hard to Find is a very good short story full of irony. There was a bad accident towards the end of the short story. When everybody got out of the car June Star said “But Nobody’s killed” disappointedly. This is ironic because June Star was disappointed nobody died in the accident, but later on in the short story everyone was dead.
Irony is found throughout this whole short story by Flannery O’Conner. As the grandmother is pleading out for her life to the Misfit, she tells him “I know you’re a good man at heart. I can just look at you and tell.” This is ironic because she knew he was not a good man at heart. The grandmother was just trying to say anything to the Misfit so he would not kill her.
