Personal Reflection Of Theoretical Perspectives On My Family

For the family interview, I decided to interview my mother who I find to be the most important key member of my family. I have spent the most time with her throughout my life and feel the most comfortable around her, so she was the best person to interview. While I was born here in the United States, my mom was born and raised in El Salvador so majority of her answers to the questions I asked had to do with her life there. Her first memory was of her first day of kindergarten, when she was around four years old. She remembers feeling small and just watching all the other students play as she kept to herself. School is a very important theme that arose during the interview. Her first day of kindergarten marked the beginning of a journey of …show more content…
My family system changed as I was growing up, since I spent a large portion of my childhood as the only child at home. When I first met my brothers in 2003 I was already eight years old while they were eighteen and twenty-one. I was not an only child anymore and had to get used to it since my brothers were not living with me. It was not hard to get accustomed to them living with me, I was still young and was excited to now have older brothers I could play with. However, my parents had a tenant living in a spare room we had who helped pay for the rent. The tenant had to leave in order to provide space for my brothers, and my parents now had to find a way to reach the equilibrium they had when someone was helping with the rent. The equilibrium was eventually reached once my brothers got accustomed to living in the United States and were able to find jobs. They helped pay the rent and my mom was as happy as ever now that she was with all her children. My brothers moved out afterwards when I was around sixteen, and once again the family system changed. My parents were once again left trying to reach a financial equilibrium and I was left without siblings at home. Financial equilibrium was not attained, since it was my two brothers helping to pay for the rent compared to just one cousin who is living with me

I interviewed my seventy-five year old grandpa Donnie, researched the Voyles lineage book that my grandma Arlene helped compile, and talked with my dad in order to find out more about my family’s history. According to Grandpa Donnie, it all began in 1759 when Jacob Voils, his wife, and his four sons landed in Port Charleston from Wales. Jacob was a poor man and could not afford the family’s way to Charleston. Desperate, he made a deal with the ship’s captain to indenture his oldest son William Voils as a crew hand for four years in exchange for the family’s way. Upon regaining his freedom, William furiously changed the spelling of his last name to Voyles to break all ties from his father Jacob.…

For my Story Corps project I interviewed my mom. I decided to interview my mom because I thought about how interesting it would be to find out a little bit more about her because I have known her for eighteen years and there are still many things that I don’t know about her. I learned a lot about her childhood and learned some of the many difficult things that she had to endure as a child. I also asked her if she liked going to school and learned that it was one of the things that she loved doing the most, and tried very hard to get farther in her education. My mom was really nervous and thought it was kind of awkward at the beginning…

Just as all significant stories require, I must start from the beginning. I was born the third and final child to 25 year old Claudia Gortarez and 29 year old Gilbert Gortarez. My childhood, I remeber, was spectacular. I was always with my dad, so much so that I’m pretty sure I have become an exact replica of him. I was fortunate enough to go to a private Catholic school from Kindergarten all the way to the eighth grade.…

When I first learned of this assignment my first thought was to interview my mom. She is the one person in my life I am closest to. Since we are only twenty three years apart, I thought it would be best to focus on her life up to the point where she decided to have kids. Though I knew most of what she told me it was still nice to just sit and talk about her life experiences. My mother was born to older parents and was the youngest of three children.…

I had no idea what to expect when this class started. What I have discovered is an extensive framework for viewing not only my family but others that I will come into contact with throughout my career. “Family systems theory is comprised of the following eight concepts: scale of differentiation, triangles, nuclear family emotional process, family projection, process, multigenerational transmission process, sibling position, emotional cutoff, and societal emotional process” (Kerr and Bowen, 1988, p.333). While I had some knowledge of many of these concepts prior to the class, I had no way to tie them all together. I now feel more prepared to understand how people find themselves in their present circumstances.…

My family does not conform to the images, ideals, and myths of past American families such as the myth of the monolithic family form, the unified family experience, and family consensus. Instead my family can be analyzed from the sociological perspective. Both macro and micro forces have influenced the development and interior dynamics of my family. My parents and two younger siblings (1 brother and 1 sister) make up the nuclear part of my family and they are all biologically related to me. My aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents make up my extended biological family.…
