Examples Of Interview With My Grandmother

It is always thought-provoking to learn about one 's family, how they feel about various life events and how they grew up. On 10 June 2016, I interviewed my grandmother, Linda Koehler, via phone to learn more about her life as she grew up as well as how she feels today about growing older, what she wishes she had done when she was younger and what she will do in the future. I choose my grandmother due to the fact that there is a lot of information that I did not know about her life; I felt that it would be a fascinating experience to learn more about my grandmother as well as being able to answer inquiries that my children may have about their family in the future. I stated my interview with my grandmother by asking her about her childhood. …show more content…
They moved to a place called Berrytown where they lived near a park. During the summer there was plenty to do at the park; during the winter, they would convert the playground to an ice rink for the kids to skate on. Linda said, “during the winter I lived on the ice.” (Koehler, 2016). When Norma and Jim’s father divorced Linda was often responsible for watching her younger brother and was not allowed to be a normal kid. She ultimately got tired of being forced to watch her younger brother, “one night I was supposed to go out with a group of friends to go to a show, mom called from a boyfriends house and told me that I was to watch my brother for the night instead. I told mom right then and there that I wanted to go live with my dad.” (Koehler, 2016). Life with her father was not what she had expected and instead of being allowed to be a kid she was forced to deal with the housekeeping, “cooking, cleaning, and laundry” (Koehler, 2016). “If I managed to get my chores done I was allowed to go to the park and skate, but only after my chores were done” (Koehler, 2016). At the age of 16, Linda married her stepmother’s eldest son, Frank Koehler. A year later she gave birth to my father, Ron and two years after that she had my Uncle, Robert. “I got married at 16 in order to get away from my dad; to get away from that environment” (Koehler, …show more content…
I’m lonely.” (Koehler, 2016) Like many others, Linda is facing the difficulties that many older people face. She is beginning to lose her friends, her kids have moved, and her grandchildren all live away from her. Her most important things now are Family, “family always comes first they are who will be there for me.” (Koehler, 2016). This is a conclusive area of the social roles of aging, Linda is falling into the roleless role; often times in earlier life role transitions often a new role takes the place of the old (Moody & Sasser, 2015). Once a person becomes to a certain age they find that there are certain roles that are no longer able to replaces, things such as widowhood or retirement (Moody & Sasser,

Stanton Kay said that “If the Loman house represents the Loman family, with Linda as the steady foundation and support.” Linda often supports and compliments her husband and his dreams: “but you’re doing wonderful, dear” (Miller 746) despite that he often yells at her and she has to calm down her husband; “go down, try it. Lindas knowledge from outside the savage reservation was a great help to both her and John, and allowed her to stay connected to her past. Teaching her son to read and teaching him things that she knew from her old life allowed her to feel at home on the reservation(page 129.) While Linda had been conditioned to avoid having children at all costs, the birth of her son, John, ended up keeping her sane. Their conversations about “the other place” included “the lovely music that came out of a box and all the nice games you could play and the delicious things to eat and drink”(page 128) created a space for Linda to both accept her new life, with a child, and remember her other…

When Jeanette was only three years old, Rose Mary applauded her for cooking hot dogs. Jeanette and her siblings had to find food on their own when their mom and dad were out of town. When there was not food during the school year, Jeanette had to pick up untouched food from the trash cans just to eat. These types of examples show what Jeanette and her other siblings had to go through at a young age on their own just to survive. Taking the example of Jeanette cooking at a young age showed the lack of commitment from the mother but at the same time she wanted to her children to learn the value of being independent.…

She laughed and asked my aunt if she remembers what the cell phone looked like. My grandmother adds, “The cell phones that are out now are so much smaller compared to what was in my generation.…
