Personal Narrative: An Interview With My Grandmother

Superior Essays
In this paper I choose to interview my grandmother. I thought that her experience with adulthood and different changes that happen in her life would be an interesting story to share and know more about. Saadia is 76 years old and she is my paternal grandmother which I lived with her all my life before I got married and move to the United States.
My grandmother is from Morocco. Her parent never send her to school. When she was a little girl she lost her father and when she turned to the early adulthood she lost her mother. Also she had one brother that she lost couple decade ago. When she was a 17 years old, she got married and started her adulthood responsibilities earlier in life starting with taking care of home that include her husband

It was the death of her son in early age especially after getting married and he just had a baby girl. This event was most choking for her because it was not expected for the loss of her son which was in his early adulthood. This illustrates well the no normative life events that can happen to anyone of us but the timing of this wish matter in this situation. According to “developmental psychologist Bernice Neugarten advised us back in 1976, we have to pay attention not only to the event itself, but also to the timing” (Bjorklund, 2015). This sad event was hard for her to overcome and took long time to accept the situation and to deal with the fact that she lost one of her kids and try to live with her …show more content…
So I asked her how she feel about her health problem and how she see the progress of her condition during last decade. She started her answer by saying” when I was in your age I never said I am tired our generation was so active than your generation.” I was not surprise by this because I believe it is true. Then she said that her health condition is increasing with age. The first thing that changes during her early adulthood was the problem in vision which was corrected by using glasses. Then she has problem with her high blood pressure which was also controlled by medicine, the other thing that she has is an increase in the cholesterol level which was causing her a problem in the vlood circulation but she did a very good regime with the medication and she was able to overcome this one too. But the last problem that she just had within the last year is her knee problem. She lost the water that is located in the knee. This problem reduced her activity outside home. And she said that can be an effect for the two fractures she had when she was in her early adulthood in the same leg. This explanation of her health problem illustrate exactly what Lachman said about the biological and physical changes that happen during adulthood “Some of the common changes that may emerge in the middle years include back and joint pain, tooth and

When I was in the sixth grade my maternal grandfather was diagnosed Multiple Myeloma. I didn’t know much about what it was but I knew it was bad. It was cancer and as I sixth grader I knew that cancer was a scary word typically used to describe some sort of disease that would later turn fatal. My grandfather wasn’t given a sentence, none of us were sat down by the doctor and told we sound be preparing our goodbyes, we were told that the cancer wouldn’t kill him and to go on living a normal life. Which he did, with the exception of monthly doctor visits and the occasional surgeries. As I matured I began to watch my grandfather more and I was getting to the age where I understood what was happening and why. I was no longer an eleven year old…

When I was in 3rd grade, the only woman who had ever taken care of me passed away due to cancer. My Grandma took care of my mother and I from the time I was born and continued to care for me after my mom moved away. Our lives weren't very luxurious. She worked at Polk Community College as their lunch lady and I never had much; including my own bed. Still, I was never unhappy. I spent many hours after school sitting in the sparsely active cafeteria, while she served the students with a smile on her face. My Grandma was a kind, selfless woman who would never let you go hungry. She instilled in me how important it is to take care of the people around you, so that when you are in need, they will take care of you. It’s cliche, I know, but the world truly did lose a great human being. After her passing, My Mimi, who is my father’s grandmother, took me in and supplied me everything I needed to succeed in life. She worked until she was 70 to ensure we would always be comfortable. The amount of sacrifices she has made for me over the years is simply inconceivable. While she is a natural nurturer, she has always been a proud and…

When I first learned of this assignment my first thought was to interview my mom. She is the one person in my life I am closest to. Since we are only twenty three years apart, I thought it would be best to focus on her life up to the point where she decided to have kids. Though I knew most of what she told me it was still nice to just sit and talk about her life experiences.…

Every Christmas Eve our family gathers around the coffee table in our apartment in New York City. During the day we go to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and buy chocolate candies from the Greenwood Pastry on the corner. Uncle Riley leads the way as we walk the streets until the light begins to fade between the office towers and the crippled gargoyles forever perched on the corners of the buildings that illuminate a golden age gone by. We laugh together and reminisce about the previous Christmases we have spent together. The elevator seems quieter on these nights, almost as if it has a respect for the holiday, but I know it’s just because we’re all crammed in there together. When the doors open on the fifth floor, we spill out, pushing in…

My grandfathers family did this because they were poor and it helped make the food more filling. He continued the tradition and raised his children with peanut butter on everything. It took his kids awhile to start enjoying it but once they did they would always ask for the delicious sweet spread on everything!…

“If a woman cannot stay home with her children, then maybe she just should not have them!” Natosha Keller, my mother, is a stay at home mom who believes if a woman were to have children, her number one priority should be to take care of her children and not have to worry about anything else. On the other hand there are other mothers who do not have a choice to being a stay at home mom, and they have to work to support their family. Making the decision to stay with your children or join the workforce can be a difficult process. For a lot of parents it is damaging for them to be away from their children for more than a few hours a day, and that is a big reason why we have stay at home moms. Natosha Keller is a great mom because she taught her…

In early August of 2012, my dad and I decided to visit my Grandpa and Grandma Hurt in Florida. We hadn’t seen them in a couple years and it was time to spend quality time with them because time goes quickly, and you never know what could happen. The car ride seemed forever, but I was so excited to go to Florida. The car ride was almost unbearable to sit hour after hour. The only peculiar thought about this trip, is that my grandpa was sick, and the doctors did not know what exactly was wrong. In 2009-2010 he was diagnosed with lung cancer, thankfully he overcame that cancer, and came out strong. But right amongst the time of this trip, he became ill. But still, I couldn’t be worried, my grandpa is a veteran of the military. He has a bright…

I decided to interview my mom for this paper because she has had a significant role in my upbringing and she means a lot to me. Since my mom and I are very close, like best friend status, I already knew a lot about her which made the interviewing process much easier. My mom and I share a lot of the same views on many issues but have differing views on a few, especially under the diversity category. I live at home with my mom and father and so I see my mom everyday which is one reason why our viewpoints are similar, so we can both avoid cognitive dissonance and it makes the day to day living more manageable.…

Every Saturday, I distinctly recall the smell of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. The radio would be playing in the background, masked by the overwhelming chatter occurring throughout the house. So many things happening in such a small space: what I remember most, is the sound of laughter, and the smiles that surrounded me. My grandpa hollering because he cannot hear the television, my mother still drowsy from the sleepless night, My grandmother singing to the radio that was barely audible over the commotion, and me, invariably sat looking at all that surrounded me, enthralled at how lucky I was to have a heart so full. My family so different to most, but so beautiful to me, instilled in me such a strong sense of independence, strength and determination.…
