Examples Of Intellect Vs Sexual Selection

a. A reader would expect that the sexual selection would only be improved based on the increase in “intellectual powers”, but in reality, the increase in intellect causes us to be less favorable in sexual selection. As humans, the species would like the believe that we have progress in both intellect and sexual selection, but Darwin asserts that the two work in conjunction with each other.
a. A reader with an understanding of rudimentary biology would know this to be true. The reason that this passage is interesting is that most of the modified traits do not get passed down. The picture challenges our expectations of how a difference in a characteristic can lead to a death in the individual of a species. More surprising is the frequency of

For this week’s lectures, we had three different readings. Two of which were from the book called “The Selfish Gene,” by Richards Dawkins; chapters six and ten. The other was chapter nine from “The Hadza: Hunter-Gatherers of Tanzania by Frank W. Marlowe. In chapter six from “The Selfish Gene,” they initially introduce the idea that organisms with similar genes want to help other organisms with similar genes that way those genes will have a better chance of survival. Dawkins’ argument is that this theory can be proved by observing altruism and essentially nepotism.…

In chapter five of The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, the quote from The Origin of Species talks about how there is no explanation for the reasons behind inheritance. There has been no explanation for why a child might get one characteristic from one parent, and a certain one from the other. No scientist has been able to pinpoint why a child might get traits from an aunt, or an uncle. Charles Darwin writes about how children often inherit characteristics from their grandfather as well. This quote is particularly fitting for this chapter in the novel, because it is the beginning of Calpurnia Tate’s relationship with her grandfather.…

In chapter 3, Wilson compares Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection to a “recipe with three ingredients” – variation, consequences and heredity – where the end result is definite and unavoidable. Variation may be manifested in the physical appearance, behavior and other measurable or observable characteristics. These distinct differences in traits among individuals determine their survival, reproduction or reaction to situations. Traits are also passed on from parent to offspring because of heredity.…

Why Nonhuman Primates Engage in Infanticide When anthropologists began to study infanticide, it was seen only as abnormal and counterproductive behaviour. Anthropologists could not discover any positive reasons for primates to engage in infanticide. This is partly due to the fact that infanticide is seen as criminal and deviant in human society. A second reason was due to a lack of evidence and insufficient research done about infanticide. Initially, infanticide was considered bizarre because under natural conditions, animals of the same species rarely kill each other.…

In Inheritance: How Our Genes Change Our Lives and Our Lives Change Our Genes, author Sharon Moalem uses a concoction of historical happenings, real-life experiences, and patient case history to portray two main biological concepts: deviations from Mendelian genetics and epigenetics (Moalem, 2014). In regards to the AP Biology curriculum, these two concepts relate, respectively, to the third and fourth big ideas that make-up the course’s framework. The third big idea in the AP Biology curriculum declares that, “Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes” (The College Board, 2015). The continual survival and growth in all living organisms hinge on the genetic information they inherit from…

Rape: Nature or Nurture? Women are overrepresented in the rape victim pool. Men can be victims of rape as well, but rape mainly effects women (Miller 383). This leads theorists to the question: what is different in males that causes them to rape far more often than females? Often, the answer stems from either a nature or nurture standpoint.…

In Jones short selection of “The Decent of Men”, he is taking Darwin’s theories about “Of Sexual Selection and Natural Selection” and I would say updating them and not creating something altogether new. The difference that I see is that Jones has new information to add because so much time has passed since Darwin wrote his book. We have learned that the population of men is descending, or is not as favorable as it once was by pure observation. Jones takes Darwin’s idea of the battle of men against men, who could produce the most offspring and goes in depth on the topic even proposing a new threat being that men are not battling against themselves but are battling against women. Jones believes that women have become a new threat,…

Dr. Roughgarden’s talk discusses the evolution of gender and sexuality. She challenges Darwin’s Sexual Selection Theory which suggests that males are created with a higher sexual drive than females are. Along with this idea, Darwin implies that females are attracted to males whose appearance is, in simple terms, beautiful. Dr. Roughgarden disagrees with this and offers some examples as to why this theory is false. One of the examples that most interested me was her explanation of homosexuality and how it contradicts Darwin’s theory.…

he Great Debate” was an interesting article that helps explain really well the way that genes are passed on from generation to generation. Sexual selection is an important subject which sometimes creates many diversities. After reading the article, I can agree that sexual selection plays a very important role in the development of the human mind. Through generations, all living things came to sexual selection as the way out of obtaining an attractive and intelligent (in human cases) offspring. For the most part we expect to be able to explain most of the characteristics of an organism as adaptations; that is we assume that they have been ‘designed’ by natural selection – the filter which only allows the genes of successful individuals to reach the next…

Sexual selection is a mode of natural selection where typically members of one gender choose mates of the other gender to mate with. Normally the female does the choosing so the male must compete with others. Some organisms have traits to attract mates like peacocks have feathers. The purpose of competition is a survival of the fittest scenario. To have offspring that would survive to reproduce.…
