In the United States, we have a fairly common practice of Institutionalized racism, which is the system of inequality based on race, and unfortunately it happens more than you would expect. It occurs in institutions such as Public Governments, Private Corporations, and of course Universities. The term Institutionalized Racism was first introduced in the late 1960’s by Black Power activists Stokely Carmichael and Charles V. Hamilton. This term was defined by William Macpherson to mean, The Collective of failure of an organization to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their color, culture, or ethnic origin. Institutional racism is the differential access to the goods, services, and opportunities of society.

Personally Mediated racism is includes the specific social attitudes inherent to racially prejudiced action, discrimination, and stereotyping. Internalized Racism is the acceptance, by members of the racially stigmatized people, of negative perceptions about their own abilities and intrinsic worth. Low Self-esteem can characterize these traits, as well as low esteem of others involved around them. The embracing of “white ideals” most commonly sees this racism, or the devaluation of one’s self, others, and a reigning feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. However it is difficult to eradicate the idea of racism seeing as it has no clear origin; while it is true that racism is learned and not something that we are born with, where it comes from is still a mystery, so why do we separate racism into categories? Racism is racism no matter which way you look at it, whether it’s Institutional, Personally Mediated, or Internalized. Institutional Racism can affect people of all ethnic backgrounds and affect people in various ways, which can impinge their personal attitudes, self-esteem, morale, which can lead to depression, and how they feel in and out of the institutions.
