Examples Of Institutional Sexism In Today's Society

Improved Essays
From birth, girls are treated differently. Sexism presents differently at all ages, but it always has the same effect. It teaches women and girls that they are worth less than men. The most pressing issue in today’s society is institutional sexism.

The first reason institutional sexism is the most pressing issue in today’s society is because girls are taught from childhood to allow violence and bullying from boys and men. An example of this is when a young boy is mean or even violent to a little girl, we as a society say it’s because he likes her, and she shouldn’t get upset. This reaction is not okay. Phrases like ‘boys will be boys’ teach boys it’s okay to be mean and hurt girls, and teaches girls it’s normal for boys (and later men)

Unfortunately, because the institutions are also ran by sexism, women must often conform to these roles in order to keep their jobs, or avoid any punishment by the dominant male group. However, with this, we must endure gender microaggressions that invalidate, belittle, or deny our worth, capability, and presence as human beings. We have to constantly worry about what we wear to the office or to a party or taking a walk down around town in order to avoid “sending the wrong messages” to men’s perverted minds. We have to make sure we do not get too drunk at the bar so we are not sexually assaulted while under the influence. We also have to keep our sexual lives a secret and limited in order to not be labeled as “sluts” and “whores.”…

I attended a holiday celebration when I was home from school after fall semester and was seated for dinner with a large group of people. The woman to my right was explaining why she had to leave early, and she briefly mentioned that her husband would be driving to the restaurant in downtown Chicago from a distant suburb to pick her up. The man across from her laughed and said, “we’re going to have to take his man card away” in reference to the woman’s husband. I had a number of responses to that statement in my head, but as I have in many other instances of casual sexism, I found myself with my mouth sealed shut. I spent the remainder of the evening considering why our associations with specific activities, styles, preferences, and etc. are…
