Examples Of Injustice In The Crucible

The difference between right and wrong, and how to handle a situation like it is still something that is debated today. Some may go the extremes to kill the ones who commit the unjust, while others may simply protest. In The Crucible the characters debate whether or not the executions caused by the witch trials are unjust punishments considering how the court was never really adequate in providing evidence for the hangings. Throughout the play, there were several occurrences where the characters were unjustly accused and executed. By the end of the play it is clear that The Crucible portrayed injustice. The sense of power Abigail has is one of the driving forces for the portrayal of injustice in the play. She uses it to try to frame Elizabeth Proctor, and take the pressure off herself. One of the main causes for the injustice portrayed in the play was because the court has so much authority over everything. Danforth, the insouciant deputy governor who cared more about his reputation, sided with the girls whenever a case was made against them. As a result, people were falsely accused and jailed for no reason at all. Another case of injustice portrayed by the court is that anyone is able to confess, and they will easily be let go. In fact, when Hale speaks about how the victims are confessing, Proctor responds by saying, “And why not, if they must hang for denyin' it? There are them that will swear to anything before they'll hang; have you never thought of that?” (Miller 65). It proves how the accused just confess to be free, and not have any further involvement. Proctor recognizes that the justice of the court is not “just” if an accusation is equal proof of guilt, and if the only way you can avoid punishment is by confessing. The court never truly has hard proof against someone, and just simply jail them if they are
