Jealousy fuels revenge; people commit irrational actions to satisfy their selfishness, causing them to do something they wouldn’t normally do. In the small town of Salem, Massachusetts, jealousy and revenge arose from mixed feelings and the perdu of the so-called “witchcraft.” Occurring in Salem’s rigid Puritan community, these witch trials were a perfect example of injustice spurred from vengeance. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, which takes places during era the McCarthyism, not all is lost when the race for John Proctor’s heart is between Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor. Middle-Aged man John Proctor has an affair with young teenager Abigail Williams. Abigail’s cousin, Betty, begins to tell her “ you drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!”(19). Abigail is known to be crazy and self-centered. Betty told her not to drink blood, which reveals she is jealous of Elizabeth Proctor because she’s married to John while Abigail isn’t. As Abigail begins to persuade John of how incompetent Elizabeth is, she explains to him “she is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her!”. Abigail casts a powerful emotion admiring Elizabeth’s relationship with John in which outbreaks as she begins to throw doubt and distrust into his mind about his wife. Coming from an article written in 2013, about professional golfer Tiger Woods being exposed to being a serial cheater, Woods’ wife Elin Nordergren divulged the actions Tiger was taking. The New York Post exclaimed “Nordergren scrolled through his call call history. She found another name, Jaimee Grubbs, and called her”. Elin has found out he’s been having an affair for quite some time now, and is jealous and agitated that other girls are with her husband. While Abigail assures revenge on Betty with her friend about trying to perform witchcraft, she doesn’t want the town to know what she aimed for, in order to get Elizabeth Proctor out of her life so she could have John all to herself. “Let you ask Susanna Walcott- she saw me sewin’ it in court. Or better still: Ask Abby, Abby sat beside me when I made it”(76). Mary Warren claims Abigail saw her make this poppet with a needle in it, and told her she should give it to Elizabeth. Because of this, Elizabeth would be framed of committing witchcraft, because at the same time, Abigail stabbed herself with a needle to frame her, acting revenge upon Goody Proctor. Revenge is the vengeance upon someone inflicting upon problems. In addition to the Tiger Woods article about his affair, his wife decided to take action and stand up for herself for all of his mistakes, “she pummeled his chest and scratched his face.
