Romeo and Juliet is a story about “love” and what two people are willing to sacrifice for it. Shakespeare says the play was about love but after reading the definitions of each, infatuation is way closer to what Romeo and Juliet actually feel towards each other. The definition of infatuation is an intense but short-lived passion or admiration for someone or something. Love proves to be different with its definition being, knowledge of each other, not of the flesh but through the flesh, knowledge of self, the real him, the real her, the mask slipped from the face. Juliet is almost fourteen and her mother is begging her to settle down and marry soon. When she meets Romeo, she jumps at the chance to be a happily married child. In secret, the two lovebirds marry that next day. Someone in actual love, would have gotten to know the person before deciding to spend the rest of their lives with them. You can tell that both Juliet and Romeo rushed this situation, and the emotions they are feeling could quite possibly be short lived. Some people could say that because they die for eachother, that is a true symbol of love. Most people who are in a relationship wouldn’t actually take the risk of dying just to be with their significant other. While this does have textual evidence to support it, infatuation is still the better way of describing it. Romeo and Juliet’s death was more of a, “in the moment” situation, instead of the common thought of, “an act of love”.
