Among the Sierra Nevada, California is an oil painting, and it is a prime example of a romantic landscape. Bierstadt was a successful artist creating at the end of the of the Romantic period. By referencing this painting, I will be able to analyze and interpret the pre-impressionist idea of nature with the Impressionist’s idea and then put both ideas into conversation with Thoreau’s work, Walden.
The Oxbow is a Romantic landscape that idealizes nature and glorifies it in an unnatural way. Cole was one of the most influential American artist in the nineteenth century and with the help of fellow artists, he was able to create a new style of painting landscapes. Thomas Cole and the other romanticists show the association between nature and grandeur.

Thomas Cole, John Vanderlyn and James McDonald were very influential artists and well known. While there landscapes were too expensive for the common man, they inspired other artists to create similar works. This sources discusses the expectations that society had of artists and the way that they portrayed nature. In contrast to the impressionist and Henry David Thoreau, their work was an idealization of the American landscape. This text will allow me to add historical background about nineteenth century art and the culture/era that Thoreau was writing
