In the short story, according to another peer reviewed database. It says “The final image in the story describes the discovery of a strand of Emily’s hair on the pillow next to Homer’s. As this discovery takes place, the narrator describes an “invisible dust dry and acrid in the nostrils” (Faulkner 811). Just like the “swirling dust” disturbed but not removed by the cities delegation’s visit, the past remains to show its influence in some manner on the present. The last sentence of “A Rose for Emily” suggests that the townspeople will feel the lingering influence of Emily Grierson and her generation, like dust lingering in the nostrils (Binder 7). I totally agree with this database the use of dust and acrid lingering in the nostrils is very smart and useful and it a very intelligent way of saying that Emily presence will still be felt even though she was gone.
In Conclusion, William Faulkner did a great job on this short story “a rose for Emily”. He uses strong diction and imagery to bring out the theme which is that the main character, Emily Grierson is not matured and kind of lost and still stuck in the past. With the addition of those strong literary devices, the essay was very strong and powerful and made me enjoy it very
