Examples Of Ignorance In The Odyssey

Some people say that Ignorance is Bliss. They say this, because they don’t want to know what’s going on in the world, or so called “secrets” that they don’t want to know. There is absolutely no reason to be unaware of your surroundings. In the book, The Odyssey, a man named Odysseus leads a crew, where he has gone through so much to help them get from place to place. One of the main parts in the story is when Odysseus makes it back home. He only tells his son about his return, but he will not tell his wife, Penelope. While some people believe that ignorance is bliss, ignorance is not bliss because helping others requires knowledge, people start to become dependent on others, and extended ignorance leads to sadness. Helping others requires knowledge. Knowledge is about power. Power is about helping people in need. Being unaware is not …show more content…
When people are ignorant, they rely on others to do their job. An example of ignorant people becoming dependent are some people like, the rich with maids. To be honest, they are ignorant because “all things truly indolent start from ignorance” (Ernest Hemingway) and they rely on people to do work for them. Being dependent means to be sluggish. When someone is lazy, they become unaware of their surroundings. I know some people that have never mowed their lawn. To me that’s weird because I cut our grass once a week. The thing that happens is the individual starts to become dependent on older siblings or even their elders. Sometimes people that are unaware trust others “Odysseus went to pray, and came to see his crew was being killed by lightning bolts.” (Homer, Odyssey 788) Since Odysseus trusted his crew, and went to pray, everyone died. He was unaware of the matter, and lost his crew. If he wouldn’t have depended on his crew not to kill the cattle, they would more than likely, not have died. When people start to depend on others, they aren’t aware of any situations happening on the

Many people live by the phrase “knowledge is power” while others comfortably believe in the saying “ignorance is bliss”. According to Juan D. Carrillo and Thomas Mariotti, some people would rather be ignorant because “voluntary ignorance [can] be used as a self-control device preventing the individual from embarking in a hazardous activity which he [or she] could later regret,” (Carillo and Mariotti 1). These people believe that ignorance is truly blissful because knowing an abundant amount of information about a topic, or even a person, can be severely detrimental on the state of mind. One of these fervent believers is Daisy Buchanan, a major character in the novel The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald.…

Savagery is defined as the quality of being fierce or cruel by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Savagery is seen in everyday life, from bullying in school to physical torture to murder. However, there does seem to be a difference between the brutality of men and women. When thinking back to a more primitive time, it was a male’s job to hunt and kill while females had a more protective role. The difference between men's and women's cruelty is that women are more defensive in their savagery while men tend to be more aggressive.…

In the comedy epic, The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is not a good leader because his arrogance causes his crew members to pass away and the lack of trust from his crew makes him unable to control them. Odysseus’s arrogance leads to the death of his crew. For example, while Odysseus and his crew are approaching Scylla, Odysseus knows that six of the crew members paddling will die. However, he says, “I told them nothing, as they could do nothing”(ln 620-621). Odysseus is implying that, as they approach Scylla, she will devour six crew members alive.…

In Homer’s The Odyssey everything is in flux unless declared certain by Zeus. This would have been a great tool for kings to use as a justification for why their decrees out rule all other decrees in their kingdom. They could have pointed out that Zeus’ word was supreme over everyone else’s in Olympos because he was king, therefore their word was supreme in their kingdom because they were king. It also allowed for the king to have always had the final say in an argument, while still giving citizens a since of “free will”.…

Just like Morpheus gave Neo a choice whether to go or to stay plugged in. Some people would just not be able to survive in the real world. Just like some people are athletic and are cut out to survive, some people would just much rather stay plugged in. The character “Cypher” is the best example of “Ignorance is bliss” because he turns in his own friends so that he could get plugged into the matrix once again, and forget everything that has happened to him. One of the most common forms of ignorance is something that is performed nearly every day and by every person. Most people tend to show a lack of concern as to how another person is feeling. Being ignorant towards someone’s feelings can be as simple as a disagreement with a friend and not keeping in mind how they may feel about the critique that you are giving them. Often people tend to give out insults very easily and often not worrying about how the person on the receiving end of the insults may feel, usually just to make yourself feel better. Being ignorant towards someone’s feelings is clearly shown in The Boy in the Striped…

However it should now be clear that living in a bubble of ignorance will do more harm than good, to the individual personally and humanity as a whole. It has been discussed earlier that being knowledgeable has it’s perks, as the knowledgeable individual has the potential to improve themselves, their surroundings and therefore society itself; whereas ignorance will lead humanity down a bottomless spiral, which only gets more difficult to get out of the deeper you go. It is the nature of a philosophical question to always be open to debate and interpretation, and however unfortunate it may be it is never truly possible to reach a concrete answer. One can only be provided a different perspective and perhaps a convincing argument. As J.S Mill says “It is better to be an unsatisfied human being than a satisfied pig; better to be Socrates unsatisfied than a fool satisfied.…

Tolstoy states that ignorance, “consists in not knowing, not understanding, that life is an evil and an absurdity” (Tolstoy). He says that mainly women and young children are subject to the category of ignorance. He views these groups of people as not being capable of pondering ideas as complex as the meaning of life. They take pleasure in licking the honey and live life in a state of ignorant bliss. But Tolstoy also states that people can only stay in a state of ignorance for so long, “something will turn their attention to the dragon and the ice, and there will be an end to they're licking”…
