Examples Of Hypocrisy In To Kill A Mockingbird

Improved Essays
The dictionary defines hypocrisy as “a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not possess”(“hypocrisy”). Harper Lee wanted to stand up against hypocrisy. In her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper lee depicts hypocrisy through characters that preach morals, but do not display those morals in their actions. This theme runs through many varying characters with different traits, classes, and attitudes.
In the book, a character named Ms. Gates is hypocritical in an obvious way. Ms. Gates is hypocritical because she displays racial prejudice, even though she tells her students, it is wrong. In chapter 15, Ms. Gates says to her students, “over here we don’t believe in persecuting anybody. Persecution comes from people who are prejudice”(Lee 329). Ms. Gates teaches her students that prejudice is wrong, but during the court case of Tom Robinson Scout overheard her saying racist comments about the black people. This shows preaching, but not practicing because Ms. Gates is preaching to the children that prejudice is wrong even though she was being prejudice. White characters were not the only ones who showed hypocrisy.

A member of the church displays hypocrisy by expressing that segregation is wrong but getting upset when white children are at the church. In chapter 12, a member of the church says to Calpurnia, “You ain’t got no business bringin’ white chillun here—they got their church, we got our’n”(Lee 158). Lula tells Calpurnia that the white children are not welcome at the church because it is a black church. This shows hypocrisy because she wants to kick the children out due to their race despite the fact that the black community is against the white community segregating

The people of Maycomb are significantly affected by racism and prejudice. Although there are many examples of this present throughout the text, I will be highlighting three of them; the first one being the Tom Robinson’s case. Another example of this is the bullying Jem and Scout receive as a result of Atticus defending Tom Robinson in court. The last example I’m going to share is the town's disapproval of Mr. Dolphus Raymond’s interracial relationship. All of these examples support my thesis of racism and prejudice being extraordinarily present in maycomb.…

Additionally, Miss Maudie says in the book, “‘The handful of people in this town who say fair play is not marked White Only...’” (323). Lee supports the theme of morality through diction because she uses the words “handful” and “fair.” Specifically, these words show that Miss Maudie thought that the verdict of Tom Robinson’s trial was unjust, and she was disappointed that only a few people in her town think that white people are equal to black people. The equality between races is a highly controversial issue that requires people to make moral decisions.…

To Kill a Mockingbird: Study of Prejudice “Prejudice in any form is more than a problem; it is a deep-seated evil within our society.” Bigotry goes further than one’s judgement; it spreads rapidly and defines humanity as a whole. It lies within the heart of society resulting in immense social issues that affect the innocent. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee utilizes the motif of prejudice to illustrate the prominence of the social issue of discrimination in Maycomb through Atticus Finch, Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson. First, Atticus Finch faces animosity from society due to his moral beliefs and actions.…

Throughout history, intolerance on the basis of color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, social status, wealth, and other factors has caused the undue suffering of millions around the world. This very subject of intolerance is a major theme in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. Set in the Depression-era South, Maycomb’s placid exterior masks the town’s underlying prejudice against the outliers of convention.…

Although everyone could clearly understand Robinson was innocent, the jury still went against him because it was not a matter of wrong and right, it was a matter of race. Unfortunately for Tom, it was a perceived superior word against his own. Calpurnia too was wrongly judged by Aunt Alexandria, when she would not allow Scout to go to her home. She did this for fear of Scout being exposed to an unfamiliar culture and gossip by the townspeople. Another instance of poor treatment of coloured people is the second class citizen mentality amongst the Caucasian people of the town.…
