Hubris can be defined as excessive pride or self-confidence but it can also be described as arrogance. Man’s excessive pride can only lead to one thing, which is his downfall. It can make people blind to the truth. If we let pride get to the best of us, we won’t listen to others because we think that our opinion is the only right answer. Antigone and Haemon both showed hubris in Antigone. The negative impact of hubris was the present theme in Antigone by Sophocles. In the play Antigone, Creon shows hubris. When the Chorus is talking to Creon about his decision to not bury his nephew Creon displays his feelings of the matter. When Antigone asks Ismene for help and she says no, Antigone gets upset. Antigone says, “Don’t fear for me. Set your own fate in order.” (Sophocles 4) In this quote Antigone shows a lot of hubris. She already knows what she is going to do and is set on her decision. Since Ismene isn't going to join her in her revolt she tells her to focus on herself. Just like Creon, Antigone thinks that her decision is the best. Antigone continues to talk to Ismene. Antigone says, ¨Announce the fact -- if you don't let everybody know, I'll despise your silence even more.”(Sophocles 4) Antigone continues to have excessive pride in her choice to go against the king. She has so much pride that she wants Ismene to tell everyone what she is doing. Ismene doesn't think that her decision is the best but Antigone says she will hate her if she dosen't tell everyone. Antigone’s pride comes to a downfall when Creon finds out what she did. Antigone says, ¨Take me and kill me. -- What more do you want.¨ ¨Then why delay? There´s nothing in your words that I enjoy. -- may that always be the case.¨ (Sophocles 5) Antigone finally reached her downfall when Creon locks her up in a cave. Antigone didn't even try to talk the situation out with Creon. She automatically went against him. She receives her punishment and not too long later, kills herself.
