The story begins with Theseus, a great conqueror for Athens, and one of the main characters for the story. He is on his way back home to Athens after conquering Thebes and comes across a group of ladies weeping for their late husbands. Theseus takes pity for the women and goes back to find and return the bodies to them for a proper burial (Chaucer lines 898-1008). While looking through the corpses, Theseus finds “Two youthful knights who side by side had fought,” (Chaucer 1111-1024). Their names were Arcite and Palamon and they were sent to prison in Athens after Theseus had them removed from the rubble. After years in prison Palamon spots Emily, the younger sister of Theseus's wife, through the jail cell window and Arcite goes to see what he is looking at. They immediately both fall in love with her. Then one day Arcite is released from jail but banished from Athens. Arcite's appearance changes greatly and he returns to Athens in disguise as a page for Emily. At the same time Palamon escapes and the two cousins meet in the woods. The next day they duel in a field for Emily when Theseus ends up finding
