Mental comfort is psychological level of what hope gives to people, after spiritual comfort, people can be inspired to improve their works and lives physcially. Basically, why hope can drive people perform better is because it motivates people via offering mental comfort. In Shawshank Redemption, what Andy does is totally different from others. Andy succeeds in the self-redemption, but others don’t. Other prisoners have hope of freedom and humanity in first few years, however, almost every prisoner gets institutionalized as times goes by, that is they yield to the rules within the walls. For example, Red is known as a man who “knows how to get things” in Shawshank. He has been applied for conditional release for several times before Andy came, however, he never got authorized by judge. His hope of freedom and patience has been banished by time. Like Red says that “These walls are kind of funny. First you hate ’em, then you get used to ’em. Enough time passes, gets so you depend on them. That’s institutionalized.” These words fully explicate the changes of mind of Red during his prison life, and demonstrate his helplessness. Even such a powerful man like Red gets institutionalized, how can other prisoners keep their mind.
