“Run, Scout! Run! Run!” (Lee 351) A piercing screech rang through the night air. Boo bolted upright from his bed. His mind raced with a thousand thoughts. Scout. Scout was in trouble. He recognized that voice. Jem. They were in trouble. Boo threw his sheets off his bed. He yanked his jacket off its hook and flew out the door. Running through the pitch-black night, he pulled the jacket on and ran to the oak outside his yard. He tripped. He wasn’t used to running, or any kind of movement. As he rounded the corner onto the street he saw Jem wrestling a tall figure. Bob Ewell. Without hesitation, he lunged.
In this scenario, Boo Radley shows some incredible qualities of bravery. Most importantly, however, he changed someone’s life, and that is what makes Boo the most heroic character in To Kill A Mockingbird.
Some might argue that Boo wasn’t involved enough, didn’t do enough, to deserve the title of “hero”. However, don’t need to have pages dedicated to their incredible actions; they simply need a few seconds to change a life. For example, Boo saved Jem’s life in a split second display of heroic qualities. Also, he transformed Scout’s view of the world over the course of a short walk across the street. Personally, Boo had that effect on me. At the end of the novel, Scout reimagines her childhood from Boo’s point of view. These few paragraphs were some of the most emotional moments of the novel for me. In a few seconds, I was reduced to tears. Nostalgia for Scout’s early days, a revolutionizing new point of view, and dozens of unexplainable emotions swirled through my head. The power of Boo getting to know Jem and Scout as almost “his children” is instantly evident.
