is important because he is a character that everyone should look up to; not only in the novel but in reality. Scout is confused as to why he is defending Tom Robinson. She asks why he is defending Tom and Atticus clarifies that “If I didn’t, I couldn’t hold my head up in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature” (100). Atticus has the ability to stand up for his beliefs because he allows himself to be open minded. He believes that Tom is innocent and determinedly claims “That boy may go to the chair, but he’s not going till the truth’s told” (195). Based on Atticus’ perspective on the case, he reveals that he is honest and noble. He also takes Tom’s case because he wants to uphold his integrity and self respect. To further prove his integrity and self respect he exclaims “This time we aren’t fighting the Yankees, we’re fighting our friends. But remember this no matter how bitter things get they’re still our friends and this is still our home” (101-102). Atticus realizes that the trial won’t only be hard on him but on his kids as well. He understands that his family will receive unwanted cruelty but because of his social class he keeps his head held high. Atticus doesn’t resent the community because of their comments but instead he lets ‘bygones be bygones’ and ‘forgives and forgets.’ Afterwards, Heck Tate forcefully gives Atticus a gun to shoot Tim Johnson. As a matter of fact, Scout a strong willed six year old who narrates T.K.A.M decides to rise up and take a stand. In the beginning of the novel, Miss. Fisher offers Walter Cunningham a quarter to buy lunch but he denies her offer. Scout takes the initiative to explain his situation “You’re shamin him, Miss. Caroline. Walter hasn’t got a quarter at home to bring you, and you can’t use any stove wood” (28). Miss. Caroline barks out to Scout “Jean Louise, I’ve had about enough of you this morning” (28). To begin with, Miss. Caroline had given Scout a lecture because she knew how to read ‘The Mobile Register.’ Majority of the students were afraid to explain Walters situation; different from Scout. She explained and demonstrated bravery. It seems that Miss. Caroline is sensitive, short tempered, and impatient. Soon after, Cecil Jacobs teases Scout that her daddy is a ‘Nigger lover.’ Scout gets angry and wanted to defend her father by fighting but instead she though “I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away. It was the first time; I ever walked away from a fight” (102). Scout listens to Atticus attentively and understands the concept when he tells her to walk away from anyone who bothers her about the trial. She weighs her options on walking away and being called a coward or listening to her father and to maintain integrity. In her
