Examples Of Heroism In The Odyssey

Improved Essays
Every book and piece of literature has a hero in it. They all are different and they all face different challenges, that aren’t always slaying beasts like some people may assume. Yet, they all do have one thing in common; standing up for someone or doing the right thing or staying loyal, even while facing hardship. A type of hero is the one who does what is right even when others will frown on them and create prejudice. Examples are like Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird and Juror Eight from 12 Angry Men. Another type of hero can be the typical type that comes to mind, one who slays beasts and goes on crazy adventurous journeys. Odysseus from The Odyssey is a great example of just that.

Juror Eight is a hero for many reasons just like Atticus was. Firstly, a hero is someone that has bravery and courage, he also puts himself before others. Juror stood against all other’s opinions to prove his own. Juror Eleven says it best, “It takes a great deal of courage to stand alone even if you believe in something very strongly” (Rose, 28). This basically means that no matter how much you believe you are correct, it’s still hard to fight through all the peer pressure to prove yourself instead of just taking the easy way out and going with others. He turns every single juror to “not guilty” when they started out as eleven to one, the one being eight, in favor of “guilty.” He started out as the guy who just gave the poor boy, getting voted on to get “the chair”, and he ended as the guy who persuades everyone to put the facts into action. They then realized there’s a reasonable doubt to the boy killing his father. He also is a hero because he puts Juror Three in his place by saying strongly, “You want to see this boy die because you personally want it--not because of the facts. You are a beast. You disgust me,” (Rose, 43) and after he roasts him, Three says, “I’ll kill him” (Rose , 43). Eight then says,“You don’t really mean you’ll kill me, do you?” (Rose, 43). Odysseus from The Odyssey is that type of hero. In the book, Odysseus just got finished with the ten year long Trojan War to only find himself on any man’s toughest journey home. He faces many challenges as he sails back to his throne and his wife on Ithaca, on a ten year trip that should’ve only taken two months. A hero can be one who kills or outmaneuvers dangerous monsters protecting his crew. After Odysseus is finished in Troy he lands on the island of Sicily and his curiosity takes over, so him and a couple crew members scoured the island. They end up in a cave with no one in it, yet there is piles of food. After eating some of the food, the owner returns, he is a huge strong cyclops. He eats some of his crew then Odysseus realizes he must act fast, he says, “‘Here, cyclops, try this wine to top off the banquet of human flesh you’ve bolted down! ’” (Book 9, ) Odysseus used his heroic-like intelligence to think of a way to get out of their situation because he uses his head and knows he can’t kill the Cyclops for there is a huge boulder only movable by him blocking the entrance. Afterwards, the Cyclops gets drunk and falls asleep so Odysseus thinks of a plan to sharpen a stick and blind the Cyclops. He then uses his intelligence to tie them to the bottom of the sheep so the Cyclops couldn’t find them on the

In order to live a successful and happy life, both "The Odyssey" and "The Cask of Amontillado" show that perseverance is the most important quality to have, because struggles yield good results and goals are reached. Some may believe that perseverance does not lead to happiness and success, however, struggles yield good results. In "The Odyssey", Odysseus shows great perseverance despite the troubles he faces, such as "the Cyclops" (306), "the Lord Helios" (922), "the suitors mad with fear" (1290), and many more. Odysseus had multiple obstacles throughout his journey that could have hindered his success. He was able to fight through every battle that came his way, and return to his home in Ithaca.…

Based off of stereotypes, heroes are supposed to have ridiculous costumes and good looks, but in reality, heroes are supposed to be people that use the events around them, and their knowledge to complete their tasks. They are usually based off of appearances, and are not always viewed by the traits that make them fit into the title of a hero. A hero has characteristics of being honorable, being selfless when trying to protect others, and not acting fearful when everything around is against your favor. Heroes are people that are honorable/honored because their lives were sacrificed for the greater good. In an excerpt it says, “...Douglass, this former slave, this Negro beaten to his knees...visioning a world where none is lonely, none hunted...…

"Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary" this is a quote from Gerard Way, a famous musician with an insightful viewpoint, regarding heroism. I think this quote represents heroism very simply, yet in the truest way. Homer, in the epic poem, The Odyssey, suggests that Odysseus is a hero. Homer develops this assertion by pointing out Odysseus's heroic characteristics in the various trials that he faces. The speaker's purpose is to inform the audience of what true heroes are like and the traits that they may possess in order for them to understand that Odysseus is the ideal example of a hero, regardless of his flaws.…

Faced with death in the hands of a seemingly insurmountable adversary who “rip[s] [men] limb from limb to fix his meal”, Odysseus persists indefatigably in his attempts to escape. By remaining optimistic, the Greek king is a source of positive energy and inspiration for those around him.
