Redemption is of release for guilt. Someone is seeking forgiveness for a wrong that they have done. On the other hand heroism is defined as displaying or committing a courageous action. These two things are very different. In Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner a story of redemption and heroism is told through Amir’s point of view. The story follows Amir’s progression from a self-centered child to a contemporary hero through acts of selflessness. Amir demonstrates his selfless heroism through acts of good will. Amir’s selflessness came in three steps: by marrying Soraya and confronting Assef and freeing Sohrab and giving him a better life by taking him to America.

Assef is introduced again in chapter twenty-two. Assef is the talib that purchased Sohrab from an orphanage. As a grown man Amir demonstrates another act of selflessness by travelling into dangerous Kabul to save his half- nephew Sohrab. This act is both redemption and heroism. Amir attempts to buy Sohrab from Assef. Their meeting is nothing less than terrifying after Amir discovers it is Assef who he is dealing with. When Amir and Sohrab try to leave, Assef tells Amir there is a price for Sohrab; one that could not be met with money. “’We have some unfinished business, you and I’” (Hosseini, 286) referring to their childhood. As a result of their conversation Amir has to physically fight for Sohrab. This fight is to get “custody” of the child, whoever leaves the room alive gets to keep Sohrab. To summarize, Amir was acting heroically by going risking his life to save a little boy he does not know and has only recently found out he is related to. Amir did this to redeem himself and for Hassan, knowing that Hassan would do it for him, because he was a loyal
