Throughout time the definition of a “hero” has been shown to be interchangeable with everybody's views being comparative as well as contrasting that’s why we as people view the idea of heroism as dynamic for example, Thor Heyerdahl once said, “I was in uniform for four years, and I know that heroism doesn't occur from taking orders, but rather from people who through their own willpower and strength are willing to sacrifice their lives for an idea.” He describes how heroism becomes achieved with willpower, strength, and sacrifice. Another notable figure that has given his idea of heroism was Christopher Mcdougall he claimed, “Extreme heroism springs from something that no scientific theory can fully explain; it's an illogical impulse that flies …show more content…
Throughout the text of Beowulf heroic acts are showcased as choice driven by cultural values. Beowulf promotes the idea of choice when he hears of Hrothgar and the Danes being maliciously terrorized by the son of Cain Grendel. After hearing this news he makes the choice to sail to Denmark with his fellow Geats. The narrator states, “So Beowulf chose the mightiest men he could find, The bravest and best of the Geats, fourteen in all, and led them down to their boat (204-207).” this quote shows Beowulf’s drive to rid Herot of Grendel he becomes driven by the sense of the Anglo-Saxon cultural value of Destiny and lineage because Beowulf’s father, Ecgtheow, owes his life to Hygelac, so ultimately due to Beowulf’s lineage his destiny becomes to rid the Danes of Grendel. Furthermore later on in the poem Beowulf becomes presented with another challenge when Grendel’s mother comes to seek revenge on the Danes for her the death of her son. The narrator says, “The he saw the mighty water witch, and swung his sword, his ring marked blade straight at her head (1518-1520).” In this quote Beowulf has already made the choice to rid the land of the rest of Cain’s descendants, this quote serves as a representation of Beowulf choice to fight off Grendel’s mom the heroic value shown here is sacrifice, though it may be a christian value Beowulf is still driven by this value because he wants the fame he will receive from killing …show more content…
The heroic traits of being strong and physical are widely shown throughout the poem. In the beginning for example in the beginning of the poem the narrator says, “In his far-off home Beowulf, Higlac’s follower and the strongest of the Geats-greater and stronger than anyone in this world (194-196).” This shows the Pagan value of masculinity as well as the leadership quality of strength and physicality with Beowulf being pictured as the strongest of all the Geats. This ultimately showcases him as an Anglo-Saxon hero. In addition to this idea later on in the poem during Beowulf’s fight with Grendel the narrator says, The captain of evil discovered himself in a handgrip harder than anything he had ever encountered in any man on the face of the earth. Every bone in his body coiled and recoiled, but he could not escape. He was desperate to flee to his den and hide with the devil’s litter, for in all his days he had never been clamped or cornered like this (749-756).” This shows Beowulf being strong and physical because not only does he show traits of being physically strong, it also shows mental strength as well because he takes on a creature who can’t be killed with any weapon, Beowulf rips his arms from the socket and take him on which none of the Dane’s

Beowulf, being the most heroic warrior of all, was called upon the king of Danes to fight Grendel (pg. 10 line: 41-42). Beowulf depicts heroism by his actions towards Grendel because he was not afraid of him. For instance, Beowulf does not wear his armor and states he can defeat Grendel on his own, which he does. During the battle against Grendel, the epic describes the grimness…

Beowulf Of all the people we meet in life, few are heroes. A Hero is defined as “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.” In the epic poem Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf could be considered a hero. He displays many heroic traits such as bravery when he defeated Grendel, fearlessness when he killed Grendel's mother, and loyalty when he became king of the Geats fifty years later. When Hrothgar’s hall was being attacked, Beowulf was there to help.…

Throughout the epic poem of Beowulf, the main protagonist Beowulf is shown to thoroughly exemplify all of the traits of the epic hero. His heroism is displayed on two distinct sections of the epic, contrasting his original uninhibited heroism and later, his aged mature heroism. In the beginning of Beowulf, Beowulf was portrayed as the pinnacle of the young, brave, chivalrous knight-like warriors expected during the Anglo-Saxon period. He rushed to Hrothgar’s kingdom of the Danes from the kingdom of the Geats, which is believed to be an area of southern Sweden, to save the kingdom from destruction at the hands of Grendel. He had no responsibility other than to kill the monster and ensure the immediate safety of his party and the town.…

I agree to Vaught’s argument that Beowulf’s battle with Grendel’s mother is more exciting and important to show Beowulf’s heroism in the poem than is his earlier battle with Grendel because the development of the story shows the development of Beowulf’s heroism. The fight with Grendel could be regarded as a precursor to show Beowulf’s overall heroism in the poem, just as “his successful introduction to the king”, because the description of this fight is relatively shorter than that of the fight with Grendel’s mother. Furthermore the fight with Grendel works as a means to show Beowulf’s characteristic feature that “is not with animalistic instincts of rage or fear, but with something potentially heroic and particularly human” which differs…

The epic poem Beowulf is based on the themes of revenge and heroism, but the theme revenge has the main impact on the characters. The poet uses the theme of revenge to inspire character motivation, specifically that of Grendel, Beowulf, and Grendel’s mother. To begin with, Grendel seeks revenge against Hrothgar and Herot for being loud in their praises to God. Grendel doesn’t believe in God because he is a pagan. “A powerful monster, living in the darkness, growled in pain, impatient as day after day” (Beowulf, p. 48).…

There are many arguments to what a hero must be and what qualities they must have. The superheroes that cover comic books can lift cars with a finger and carry massive buildings without strain. What if the qualities that make up a hero are not as herculean as we may fantasize? In the grand tale of Beowulf, the main character shows how acts of character defines a hero. Beowulf’s eagerness to defeat evil, willingness to use one’s talent to help others, and courage to risk one’s life to save others show the eternal characteristics of heroism that are still treasured today.…

In Beowulf the protagonist of the story Beowulf has a respectable reputation among the Geats and their leader Higlac. When the poet introduces Beowulf he makes sure to include that he’s “Higlac’s follower and the strongest of the Geats” (110). It’s clear in these lines that Beowulf is no average man, he is regarded as the Geats’ strongest. To gain the honor of being the strongest is no easy feat, Beowulf more than likely had to prove and work to gain such an honorable title. He’s shown to be worthy of that title, as he uses his power to help people rather than use it for his own selfish gain.…

During the battle with Grendel’s mother, Beowulf was knocked down numerous times, but he was able to pull himself back up. This shows heroism because even though he gets knocked down several times, he’s able to show strength because he got right back up to start fighting. Beowulf did not have any weapons, so he swam to the bottom of the lake to get one of Grendel’s mother’s weapons to use against her. “A heavy sword, to be managed only by the best warriors, was within his reach” (GRENDEL’S MOTHER 1).…
