Gardner manages to create the multidimensional character, Grendel, through a book that falls under two-hundred pages long. Gardner develops Grendel’s persona quickly and precisely with the use of Zodiac signs assigned to each chapter. Zodiac signs automatically give the readers the power to predict Grendel’s thoughts, actions and responses to the human world. Each chapter is assigned a zodiac sign depending on the Monster, Grendel’s thoughts. For example, the setting for Grendel begins in earlier spring with the Astrological sign, Aries, a sign that is normally quick-tempered and sometimes aggressive. Gardner pictures Grendel in the beginning of the book throwing a stone at an ill-tempered ram that is unwilling to move. With one quick description of Grendel’s actions, Gardner finds away to include many traits of a typically Aries such as aggressively throwing rocks at other animals. Both Zodiac signs and Grendel are complex and unique. Every couple of months Zodiac signs change allowing individuals who are born in November to be enthusiastic while individuals born in January are conservative. Grendel also changes at this quick speed; one moment he can be full of sympathy but in an instant he can be aggressive. For example, in chapter seven Grendel decides to murder the Queen of the Danes in order to teach the Kingdom a “lesson”. Grendel states in the book “’I would kill her and teach them reality… nothing alive or dead could change my mind! I changed my Mind’”( Gardner 110). Grendel changes his mind from aggressive thoughts to sympathetic thoughts in a heartbeat, each consideration Grendel posses is unique.
