Examples Of Green Light In The Great Gatsby

Great Essays
The past holds a lot of our memories and we wish that we could go back to them. The green light is a concept that is from The Great Gatsby that any human being can relate to. The idea of the green light makes us see into what Gatsby is feeling. Gatsby’s idea of the green light is that he can restore everything and be with the girl of his dreams, he has a strong hope that his dream will become reality. The past is truly never behind us, we have the memories, although they are not physical, we still have that piece of the puzzle of the past. The memories that we have are not always complete, there will most likely always be a missing part of the past (unless you have a photographic memory). Gatsby reaches for his past that is already behind him …show more content…
We wish that he could obtain the past, but it has already been left behind. He lost his chance to take hold of his dream and keep hold of it and we know this, we feel sad for him because he doesn’t understand that it can’t be the same, it never will be again. When Nick says, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” (180), Gatsby is always going to be stuck in the past and will continuously be taken back mentally. Gatsby’s past has continued to elude us, it forever will, no matter what there is no way to regain what has been left in the past. Along with leaving Daisy behind five years ago, Gatsby has also left bits and pieces of himself behind, he is missing a part of himself that made Daisy fall in love with him. When he went into the army and then to Oxford, he left his old self in the dirt and created a new being that changed him. When he was penniless was when Daisy was in love with him, he didn’t realize that money didn’t matter. Gatsby didn’t know that Daisy didn’t want money, she just wanted to be with Gatsby and this is where his dream all started to fall apart. If he could have just become fully aware that Daisy wanted him for him and not money then he could have had his idea of the perfect world. Gatsby hopes that one day she will just wander into one of his magnificent parties, but that day will never come. The …show more content…
There are some things that are forgotten in the past that change us and we want to go back to that time and figure out what we lost, just as Gatsby does. Gatsby knows that he has left Daisy behind, he has left his dream behind and he can’t get it back. The green light is there to remind us that our dreams can be unattainable, we can try and try as hard as we want for specific dreams but just like Gatsby, some pieces to the puzzle are lost in the past, never to be recollected. As we grow older, there are memories of the past that we want to be able to go back to and there are small reminders, objects that have significance that bring us back to that memory mentally and not all of the entire puzzle is there. Gatsby has the green light to take him back to when he almost had Daisy and we have items with significance to remind us of times that we wish we could go back to and complete the whole dream. Gatsby can’t let go of the past, he doesn’t want to. Everyone has that one dream that has more significance above all the rest that we can’t let go of. Gatsby can’t let go of his perfect dream of being with Daisy, it’s not even really about her, he just wants her so that he can have his idea of a “perfect” world. Daisy can’t be with Gatsby though, he has changed, he isn’t the same penniless man that she fell in love with. Arnold Weinstein

For him, it is alright to use every resource he has to attract Daisy. This is reinforced, stating, “of course you can [repeat the past]!” revealing Gatsby’s illusions about the situation (pg. 110). In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald developed many motifs that span the whole book, Since a motif is a recurring image, detail, occurrence, etc. that an author develops to unify an idea and/or explore an idea, I chose the green light found throughout the book. The green light represents Gatsby’s dream to be with Daisy again and the perfect future that he strives for with Daisy. This idea is found throughout the book especially when Nick sees Gatsby alone at the end of chapter one, when Nick was brooding over the world, when Gatsby shows Daisy and Nick his backyard, and also on the second to last paragraph of the book. “... he reached out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling.…

Daisy carelessly destroyed Gatsby’s dream by rejecting him, but to her it was not even of great consequence, as she just ends up back with Tom, still “safe and proud” with her money and class. When Tom reveals all of the shady ways Gatsby has acquired his money, Daisy turns away from Gatsby because she no longer feels that he can provide her with the security she has had all of her life: “with every word she was drawing further and further into herself, so that he gave up, and only the dead dream fought on as the afternoon slipped away, trying to touch what was no longer tangible, struggling unhappily, undespairingly, toward that lost voice across the room” (134). Daisy does what is natural for her to do, turning to Tom who is secure is his class and wealth, and in doing so destroys Gatsby’s dream, and getting rid of all the purpose in Gatsby’s life because he has placed it all in Daisy. The last scene in this chapter describes Gatsby watching Daisy’s house because he is afraid that Tom will hurt her, but it is unnecessary because there is no more dream for Gatsby to protect anymore and…

Buddha once said, “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment” (Brainyquotes). In other words, if one spends too much time thinking about what happened or what will happen, good or bad, he will miss out on what the present holds out for him. This quote relates to Gatsby’s frequent mindset of trying to recreate his past. F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of The Great Gatsby, uses symbols to establish the notion of not being able to repeat the past. He uses symbols to represent the passage of time such as the green light, Nick’s clock, and the seasons.…

Since he is always thinking about the past, he can not understand the present situation, especially with Daisy. Gatsby thinks he can swoop in and take Daisy from Tom because Daisy “never loved [Tom]” (Fitzgerald 132). This is false because it is not that easy to just take away someone’s wife like Gatsby dreams of doing. Since Gatsby is so excited by the fact that he will be able to re-experience his past with Daisy, he is blind to the current situation in front of him, which eventually leads to his…

The yearning for happiness and the upcoming future is a feeling that almost everyone has in their lives. Throughout the world many cling on to that feeling which provides comfort and purpose for their lives, as well as a destiny that they may someday reach. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the symbolic meaning of the green light is substantial to Gatsby and also to the readers. For others this green light can represent the loss of a great era and the longing for that quality of time, or a simple goal in life that awaits to be accomplished. To Jay Gatsby, the green light symbolizes his love and desire for Daisy Buchanan whom he does not only love for her character, but for what she represents.…

Luhrmann directs the scene in such a way that Gatsby fades away from view and the audience is the only one left to stare at the light like Gatsby did previously. Before it goes to white the last lines of the book are slowly shown on screen “so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” (Fitzgerald 180). The light appears brighter before the scene switches to white which signals the audience has to keep the dream alive. The metaphor conveys how people struggle to move on beyond the past, the current draws them back as they try to get to the green light. In other words, Gatsby embodies the idea people think the past is behind them when it actuality it pervades and influences every part of who they are at every point in their lives.…
